Blaze Until Fire Departmen.t Arrives •
A bolt of 'lightning struck the
barn . of • Bob ; MatcIritosh on High-
way' 86, west of Lucknow,; on
Monday night at ,what proved to
be. "just the right .time'' if • there
is such a thing asa right time
for lightning to strike.
Bob had just "returned, home
from a busy day ,at the stocker
sale in . Lucknow and : the light-
ning Struck shortly before mid-
night before they had• retired for
the night.
•
Bob and Lois" noticed 'a sharp
bolt of lightning that put out a
light bulb in the house. A few
minutes later, when they hap-
pened to go to the rear of the
house, they, noticed the south
wall of the large double barn on
fire.
Lucknow Fire Department were
summoned and Bob, With., the aid
of Dave and Harold . Elphick and
another couple who came in off
the road, succeeded in holding
the , fire with buckets until th
firemen , arrived and complete
put out the blaze.
.WRIST BROKEN
Alex MacNey, manage r of . Knee -
Milling: in . Lucknow, took a
tumble, on Monday and ended _up
with a fractured left. wrist.
Alex : was standing on a '. chair
stapling a sign to the walI,. and
as he stepped down, his foot slip-
ped .on. , thecement floor and he
fell striking his wrist. : He was
taken to Wingl}am. Hospital where,
the break was set.
The lightning .rod cable, a new
`one `last year, comes down from
the peak of the roof and, .the
fire startedin the area where it
'comes down the south 'wall. An
area about 4 ' feet square. • was
burning when first spotted. Boards
on the barn wall were badly char-
red and : were 'ripped off, by fire-
men to make sure that the fire
had not got into a : straw pile
directly. above the area thatwas,
on fire. •
Only the fact that:. the fire was
noticed' as quickly as . it was
saved • the • barn from destruction.
A number of • cattle were housed
in the barn. Switches and fuses
in the barn were blown 'by the
bolt...
Neighbours stayed on the scene':
for some time to keep • watch on
the barn for fear of another out-
break. Bob` kept watch untilabout
4:30 a,m, :A stiff wind blowing at
the time would have quickly lev-
elled the barn if the :firehad'& a
start of a few minutes Blore; or
it had ' occurred through : ; the
night.
