For Fifty Years
THOMAS W. 'SMITH
Thomas William Smith, a high-'
ly respected resident . of 'Lucknow
for close to 50, years, died at the
Wingham and District Hospital on
Saturday, March 27. Hehad been
in failing ; health • andhad been
hospitalized for ;nine months. Mr.
Smith observed his 97th birthday
in hospital on February 10th..
Mr. Smith wasborn in Derby
Township ' near Owen . Sound • in
1875 and was a carriage trimmer
by.. trade spending his early life
in Tara. On June ,3, 1903, he mar-
ried Alfie Ross, daughter of the
late. Mr. and Mrs. Alex Ross of
Lucknow, ' Her father came There
as " a'. youth to engage in the har-
ness making business at which
he . spent his lifetime.
Mr. and Mrs. ;'Smith resided in
Tara, Wingham and Detroit for
a time before . coming to Luck -
now in 1916. While in ..Detroit,
Tom worked for the Packard Car
Manufacturing -Co..
He:worked for his father-in-law
for a time and then •opened . a
vulcanizing . andupholstering shop
where the Log Cabin Restaurant
is- now located.
In 1920. he purchased the Mc-
Garry Hotel property, tore ' . it,
down and replaced •it with a mo-
dern cement r and brick garage
with attached residence and• 'a-
partment. Situated in the . heart
of . the 'village, it was : termed : the,
Central . -Garage by : which. it is.
still . known;. For 25 years;., Mr.
Smith operated the' garage 'and in
that time acted- as agent for Wil-
lys Overland and Pontiac : and Bu-
ick :• autos. His brother ; James
Smith of Wingham was associat-
ed with Tom from 1925 to ;1945
in the . garage business:
' In 1945, `,Mr. Smith sold the
property to Ross Scott, Sunoco
distributor, and Charles . Mason
took over, the garage business.
During his years in Lucknow,
Mr :Sm-ithr wasp: active din .various
community activities. He • was a
member of the Lucknow. Public
School Board ' for fifteen years,
he served as president.. of ,Luck -
now : Reid : Cross . "and for 62 years
was a member of the Tara Odd-
fellows' Lodge.In>. his' church; St.
Peters Anglican :; in Lucknow, he
served . faithfully and held several
offices While health permitted
: Mr. Smith • was the . son of the
late Alexander Smith and Jessie
Ann'' Battle, his .father being 'a
native of Scotland. Besides: his
wife, --the former Mary _ Alexandra
"Alfie" Ross, he is survived by
a sister 'Mrs. James (Jessie) Ar-
'cher
r'cher 'of Chesley and brothers. Al-
ex of Detroit, Edwin of . Union-
ton, James of Winghitm, Roy and
Victor of , Tara

Smith was conducted at the Mac-
Kenzie Memorial Chapel on Mon-
day, March 29th at 2 p.m, con-
ducted by Rev. J. R. ' King of St.
Peters Anglican Church. Mrs.
Gordon Montgomery was organ-
ist. Pallbearers were Cameron
MacDonald, Larry. Salkeld, Clar-
ence Greer, Joseph MacMillan,
Walter Alton. and James Durnin.

held in Clinton andresulted in
the sale. of 41 gilts for a total of.
$5,302.50. Although the sales a"-
erage of $129,50 was down slight-
ly from the 1964 figure of ' $137,
officials termed the sale another.
