!DON'T, KNOCK THE TEENS
A columnist on' a big city daily
recently fired* a salvo- at high
.school students, • The . 4 intrepid
;journalist gave thein both bar-
rels, with no helds 'barred, ,as an
Irishiman • might put it;,
He had been speaking togroups.
of high 'school students from mid-
dle and upper-income' homes. He
took, a verp .dun. view; of the kids,
} suggesting that: they haven't
learned manners, have no sense
adventure, are terribly, shel-.
Wed, terribly staid, terribly sad,
and _.empty: .. .

In the same column, he man-

was, .'none of those • things of
which' 'he ` accused the students,
that he. was; in fact, a hell of a.
fella who had lived; life tothe full.
Let's . face the, charges,. one ' by
one. Bad manners. My ,.'personal
experience is that their manners,
on the . whole, ; are. better than
thosef : their parents. They can
be cruel, • when: they are thought-

houghtless, . but :generally, they are more
sensitive to the . feelings of others

What they have is, too' much ',of'.it.
Terribly ; sheltered; he. says.
Nonsense. We try to: shelter them
from the sordid, the, harmful, the
evil, as. we `see them. • But .the

Terribly sad, he says. 'Baloney:
Admitted,, they 'can 'be deeply

can be wildly •'exultant; too. How

(By William Whiting) •
• Bob. Hope has so :much fun

a field day emceeing .. the • 37th.

Sciences over' ABC-TV on April
5th. For me" .the. highlight of r this
annual .program isnot the selec-
tion of, ' the winning motion pic-
ture or "best actress" award, 'but
the. Bob Hope monologue at thebeginning: of the' show: We can
remember ' some classic remarks
from past. "Oscar. Nights". •On
one occasion: Bob remarked "It's
appropriate . that /Sir 'Lawrence
Olivier is here tonight. 'After the
show, the losers will gather in
the parking ,lot , and do the * last
act of 'Hamlet." Another: "The
losers will receive monogrammed
suicide, kits." ' Here's .one we re-
member: "Keep' your eyes en the
losers tonight as they applaud the
winners. You'll see. great under-
standing; great , sportsmanship,
great acting,"
At another telecast he said,, "I
'have an , excuse 'for losing. 'this
year. I've. been sick and I'm
getting sicker. The fact is, I'm
• here against my doctor's orders.
He wanted my tickets."
And there. ,was this remark's "I
want to ; thank the wrestlers for
relinquishing their television time.
It justshows that . there's nothing
one group' of ,actors won't do for
another."
