THE BELLS THAT RANG
INTENDED FOR A.
MUCH EARLIER: ISSUE
• By Grace ('Cameron) Linley'
Detroit
As Autumn • comes around again
It takes one back to long ago,
When school -bells rang
The local fairs and back 'a
To school' we'd go.
'The summers too, . seemed longer
then
There seemed' to be more time
to lull,
Just roaming round the river-
banks
Or. `fishing down . behind the mill.
There seemed to be more • time
to do
The. things we had to 'do
•
And every morning . seemed to be
So ' filled ` with ` joy when life was
new,
It's hard : to think so many years
Have passed since . High- School
days,
And all the changes that have
come • .
Seem ,/to : leave one in a daze,.
Where ` have . the- old ; schoolmates
'gone?
They acre, scattered near and far,,
' And memory often' takes us. back
'To here -•_ or: there, :-= wherever
::.they -are, ,
When Saturday . used to come
around
There ' wasn't time to` . think,
For: we couldn't: miss a single
hour
At the 'Lucknow skating. rink!!
There were lots of fancy skaters
then •
Who curved and dived, and . some-
times dipped,
sin

But .what .,always,. ' most t exct g
was
To be at the' end 'of "crack 'the
• whip,"
Yes, . and .miss, that _ wall, by inch-
es!!
When winter's blustery .days were
ending .
And melting into spring :.
The robin's ' song seemed ^sweeter
then,
Yes sweeter . than anything;
Birds.' still sing . their.. songs of
springtime
As. 'they did -- so long' ago,
But they do not seem the ;same
somehow -
For time has changed things ,so!
Those years . we spent in high
school
Were all too few 1 „'guess,
But the memories of . our class-
mates /
Will "always be the best,
Ohl that time could turn the
pagesW back
For one brief span -- and then
'We'd talk and:. chat andremin-
isce, .
And re -live those 'days again,
The years will pass 'and time will
•.
But 'those meinories . of high.
,school
Will .hold a ' glow! ! .
For the rest `of our life we'll
member the gang
And the lessons we learned
Because of the bells 'that ; rang.,
