Monday was • • an interesting ' and • •varied day, 'so 1. shall. tellabout it. We were it Ayrshire, most •of the. time ' in Burns, Cpuntry. Ayrshire is: just about everyesing that.' a county "could be., '.t is highly, in- dustrialized in 'some places, and, those places'' we avoided where 'possible. It' has many mines. and these.you 'cannot avoid. You find: them in the 1,middle :• of towns, farms; ' wadods. or moorlands. It has a ' lovely. coastline, : part 'bold cliffs ,With. several castles and: part: beautiful sandy bays ` with 'white breakers on the ,blue water.. Prest- wick, the most. fog 'free airport in Britain is; in Ayrshire. But whatwe. remember most..are the farms. • Generally; speakingthea farms are dairy farms and asp' yoti:.might expect the cattle are mostly Ayr- shire, with a sprinkling of Hol- steins. In some fields :there seem ed to 'be barely standing; room for the cattle, but, thanks to the Gulf Stream.. bringing ' abundant ,ram- fall.the, .pastures were. -lush and green.. Milking: time is • a bit ear - tier . than at home.. and .the ' milk is collected from ' the farms, • once a day: ` Regulations are very':strict. regarding ' cleanliness • and sani- tation.. The barnyards. • all. seem to bepaved: and both stables(by- res) ,and. yards. are hosed - off after milking, The farm buildings are; almost one storey high, : hence they cover twice the :area they .do ":at home: and `seem to be strung , out over. a long distance: The f arra! where we ''camped • had ' the build- ings. includi ig ,the'. house and: •'airy built around 'three :: sides of an open courtyard ,On the ,dairy. farms there is.; not much 'grain grown, so there is not much straw 'for• bedding, and. sawdust 'seems to be used• instead On farms ' wh re Seemed was. more `grain, oats Seemed to be the.. principal ; crop, -.with . some.' bar- ley; and a very little wheat. Some of .the :grain was still completely green; . some , .was. ' ripening . and some was combined• and the straw all baled. In one' area the oats was in stooks,: lovely straight lines of ;.stooks_ the :-width of the .;field and seemingly only, a ,few feet apart. But again thanks to the gener- ous 'rainfall many fields of grain were, :completely `flat. The fields are fairly large. • We. saw ' wire fences, rather . rare in Britain ' and many lovely green' hedges, There arc marry trees in , 'Ayrshire also. Sometimes .just' single trees; • sor:e"mes little :groups); sometimes ' sneiter belts arid. sometimes large forests. Then gradually, we moved from the open. fertile -farms 'to the bare moor- lands, at; first with stone walls for fences and then warning notices, `S'atcl for Sheep, Unfenced Past= ures:" 'And sheep there were, the usual black and. white •'Scottish. sheep but some • were yellow or \orange! That, was a real myst- ery until we found that the sheep dip, colours them for a time. The Coven, nter sstron Ayrshire old strongholdsand we were told g that an Annual Conventicle is still held' in one remote place, I • mentioned the mines, • mostly coal mines Some are Very large,. very modern and very , produc- tive. Some;'' 'ire ol,.. abandoned mines, the. only signs 6014 some derelict buildings. ' and the ` old conical mine tips Some of. the tips • are flat on top, as if behead- ed.. Some are raw and red, the. colour of the 1o' a1 rock, but sonic are covered with grass and. weeds. A ,, LO,ClIALSH 'The, Kirwan '(omen's Institute met on Wednesday afternoon at.
