nection with tests made on the much
discussed Pogue carbuieter. This
device, which "was• hailed es a rev-
olutionary `development which
:would save a tremendous amount of
gasoline by giving much greater.
mileages than secured through. the
use of the regu1 r carbureter; was
apparently put through tests .by. the
Government last fall. A reeinber of
Parliament . raised' the • gttestioxi` a
few. days :ago in the House. 'of' Coin-.
roofs and stated there was some sus-
picion in the public finial concerning
..the outcome of these ',tests and °a
suspicion. in some quarters that de-
veloprnent of this device had been
,purposely curbed in' the interests of
the oil companies: '
Hon J. L. .Raistort, Minister of
National fehee, stated. -in' •reply-
that last fall one of the government,
departments had, 'taken . this car-
bureter under test:. that Mr. Pogue
was brought.. in 'and put on an allow-
ance ' of $10 a day for.six'weeks

In view of the wide public interest

might well have 'made the people
of the- country aware- promptly of
what had deveolped instead of wait-
ing until the first of May 'of ` the
following year . until some inquisi-

Canada secured the rights of this
carbureter and sold ,them to- a cer-
tain largeoil company' in the Un-
ited States•—one . with Canadian :af-
filiations= -and that the carbureter
was deliberately being kept off the

There -Were scores of ruiners. of
this kind, some of which were that
if this. carbureter were used there
would,:be no necessity . for gasoline
shortage or rationing; • The rumors•
have circulated widely and, in many
cases, have been ;the cause of' dis=-
trtist, and unsettlement and suspic-
ion of large • firms. This has had a
very' bad' effect in wartime and
should not have been allowed to
continue. '
When matters as widely public-
ized in. the press as this Pogue car -
ureter 'are found to be wanting.
e Government should net wait for
six or seven months before making
the people aware of the tests which
were , made. The Minister of 'Nat-
ional Defence is to be congratulated
upon the detailed and prompt• state-
ment he made in reply tothis mem-
ber of Parliament,•but would ,it not
have • been a whole lot better; if this
statement had been made 'six
months ago and put at rest the many
rumors which ,have • been in circula-
tion and which have reflected .un-
fairly upon certain interests?

One day after 'Pearl Harbor there
were 1200' observation or ' watch-
ing posts in California. The num-
ber now is a military secret. But
there is a vast army of. such work-
ers—both men and women on duty'
now, working in shifts of two and
four, hours. They are called "Bill
Farrell's Family" -Farrell is Cali-'
fornia's director of ground observe and attended the funeral of her aunt

tainment a success. Her sister, Miss
Marjorie MacDonald, who visited
her for a few days,- played for the
children's songs. Others taking part
were the McDonald_orchettra, Gen.
and Murray; violins, Mrs. -McDon-
ald, piano; 'a duet by Misses Wilma
Carter and Jeari McLennan of Rip-
ley and a reading by Mr. Hall of.
Lucknow,- Mr. Wellington Hender-
son of Lucknow was the auctioneer.
The articles made by the children
included two end tables, one going
to Mrs. Adam McDonald, and one
to Miss Mary Steele. There were
lawn ornaments, door stops, walled
brackets and numerous other things
both made and. donated. The boxes
also sold well and we understand..
