,The' .Bowmanville Statesman
last week reportedthree high-
lights of a Rotary Club luncheon,
one of which wasof interest
locally, and which. included the
conferring of the degrees P.P.
(Proud Papa). and M.C. (Master
Coach) upon A. M. (Andy)
Thompson. °
Concerning this feature .of the
program "The Statesman" says:
"Next on the program came Ross
Strike, in exultant mood, to per-
form a happy ceremony.. He in-
troduced as guest, "a mane who
needs no introduction". Principal
An6.4.' Thornpson, -'head-r. of the
town's Public Schools, and Im-
mediate Past President of the
Lions Club, • who- having been
obliged to remain in town during
holidays because of a prospective
"happy event", took over. man-
agement and coaching ' of. the Ro-
tary' Junior Baseball Club. Hard-
ball was being revived and Bow-
manville,' with only . three boys
having previous experience, the
"kids" wanted Andy as coach and
mentor to enter the .O.M.B.A,
League. He took hold and the
results have been told in The
Statesman. The "kid" players.
were now in the playoffs for the
championship, with only 'one
more win to give : them the cup.
"Andy wasi,sresented with the
Rotary's standard aggregation of
Baby's accouterments, which, ap-
propriately, were given for both
Andy and Mrs. Thompson. At.
the command, 'stand at. ease"
Andy • was shown the three- essen_
tiais for nervous fatherhood, a
diaper, a rattle Ad a graduated
bottle With nipple: In baseball
parlance the first was folded to
resemble. the "Home Plate'•'', the
second to distract attention from
fleeting grievandes and the last
toprovide comfort when the go,;
ing got tough in the ' small hours
of the morning. To top it off
came a blanket as an aid t.,,,
paternal lullaby. '
"Modesty and diffidence char-
acterized Andy's very touching
appreciation of the ho,por. He
gave all the credit for the base-
ball success to Ross Strike and to
the magnificent fighting spirit cf
the generally inexperienced play-
ers. To Lou' he assurred that his
instructions, drawn from person-
al, experience, would be of im-
measurable benefit for himself
and, quite possibly for his good
wife. Certainly Junior David
Mackenzie Thompson, .not yet
able to speak for himself, would
derive much comfort from this
unexpected and generous gesture
Of Rotarians". '
