Men's and Boys' Warne THURS., SEPTEMBER 21st, 1944 HONOR MEMORY OF V. °C. WINNER An impressive ceremony, was conducted at Mimico on Sunday,' in honor of the late Flt. Lt. David " Hornell, V.C., nephew 'of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hornell of Lucknow. Fitting tribute to'the young air- man was paid by Group. Capt` John McNab, senior Protestant chaplain. of No. 1 Training Com- mand. . The Globe and Mail carried in part the following account of the service: , Tribute to 'the memory of the mein and women of the Lake shore communities who have giv- en . their ' lives in this war was paid by a :huge throng which on Sunday attended a memorial service at Mimico to honor the memory of the late Flt. Lt. David Hornell, V.C., first Canadian' air- man recipient of the Empire's highest award for valor in this war. In front of the high school which is still attended by boys and ' girls who remember the Mimico her , as their . Sunday school superintendent, thousands of Lakeshore residents gathered while clergymen of ,alldenomin- ation's met with padres of the R:C.A.F., who conducted the ser -1 vice. Before and, after ,the service, a big Lancaster four -engined .air- craft, symbolic of the' service in which the young airman served, circled above the town and an air force band and squad march- ed in the parade which preceded. the service. In the parade that preceded the service R. C. A. F. forces marched with bereted Great War veterans of the Goodyear :plant at which Dave had worked be- fore enlisting, and local Boy Scouts; firemen and veteran or- ganizations. On arrival -at . the school grounds, they formed ranks before a small stand on which were seated Air Comoro= dore G. E. Wait, commandant of the War Staff College, represent ing the air officer commanding; several R.C.A.F. senior. officers, IocaI clergymen and several members of ` the Hornell family. Among the latter were Mrs. Hor- nell, the young hero's widow; Miss Elizabeth Hornell, with whom he lived as a boy; Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Coombs, Mrs. M. Hornell, Mr. and Mrs. A. 1).
