MILKWEED PODS
Public school children, in this

weed pods and most every, day

It is estimated that in . South-

the bag. The floss contained in
that many bags of pods would
be sufficient to make more than

we may have put the cart before
the horse, that is precisely what
the pods are wanted for.

HONOR MEMORY
OF V. °C. WINNER
An impressive ceremony, was
conducted at Mimico on Sunday,'
in honor of the late Flt. Lt. David "
Hornell, V.C., nephew 'of Mr. and
Mrs. Wm. Hornell of Lucknow.
Fitting tribute to'the young air-
man was paid by Group. Capt`
John McNab, senior Protestant
chaplain. of No. 1 Training Com-
mand. .
The Globe and Mail carried in
part the following account of the
service:
, Tribute to 'the memory of the
mein and women of the Lake
shore communities who have giv-
en . their ' lives in this war was
paid by a :huge throng which on
Sunday attended a memorial
service at Mimico to honor the
memory of the late Flt. Lt. David
Hornell, V.C., first Canadian' air-
man recipient of the Empire's
highest award for valor in this
war.
In front of the high school
which is still attended by boys
and ' girls who remember the
Mimico her , as their . Sunday
school superintendent, thousands
of Lakeshore residents gathered
while clergymen of ,alldenomin-
ation's met with padres of the
R:C.A.F., who conducted the ser -1
vice. Before and, after ,the service,
a big Lancaster four -engined .air-
craft, symbolic of the' service in
which the young airman served,
circled above the town and an
air force band and squad march-
ed in the parade which preceded.
the service.
In the parade that preceded
the service R. C. A. F. forces
marched with bereted Great War
veterans of the Goodyear :plant
at which Dave had worked be-
fore enlisting, and local Boy
Scouts; firemen and veteran or-
ganizations. On arrival -at . the
school grounds, they formed
ranks before a small stand on
which were seated Air Comoro=
dore G. E. Wait, commandant of
the War Staff College, represent
ing the air officer commanding;
several R.C.A.F. senior. officers,
IocaI clergymen and several
members of ` the Hornell family.
Among the latter were Mrs. Hor-
nell, the young hero's widow;
Miss Elizabeth Hornell, with
whom he lived as a boy; Mr. and
Mrs. Douglas Coombs, Mrs. M.

After Mayor Amos Waites had
opened the service, Flt. Lt. D$G.
MacLeod, . chaplain at IVfannipg
Depot, read the citation that ac-
companied; the posthumous a-
ward: Afteroutlining the action
which Dave. directed as captain
of :a flying boat, successfully
sinking a U-boat after his ship
was badly damaged by, anti-air-
craft fire, it described the officer's
action in ,maintaining morale a-
mong his crew during„ 21 hours in
the water :as follows: "... by
fortifying and encouraging, his
comrades in the subsequent or-
deal, this officer displayed valor
and devotion' to duty of. the high-
est order". •
Recalling that the young man,
had been active in religious work
all his life, that he had be``en
superintendent .. of his Sunday
School and had even been des-,
cribed as lessening his chances
for advancement in business be-
cause of the time the :spent in
such work, Group Capt. McNab
said that David .Hornell had re--
vealed the wonderful faith in the
life everlasting that chaplains
had found among men in the for -0
ces. As rescue appeared, and.1
shortly before death from expos- I
ure . and injuries overtook "him, I
Dave had led his. crew in prayer
as they clung to the dinghy in
the sea.
