Hydrographic experts of the
Mines and Resources Deparfinerit
at Ottawa have issued a . memo-
randum on a series of "seiches
which occurred on Lake Huroii
June 18th, and described them
as the sharpest and largest" re-
corded at- Goderieh, Ontario, dur
ing 'the 30 'years water -level re-'
cords - have been ,kept there. -
Seiches are caused 'by drop in
the 'air pressure over one part of
the surface of the, lake as com-
pared with the pressure on the
rest of the lake. As an area of
low, pressure 'moves across the
lake the water surface under it
rises, and ,the . water. is . conse=-,
quently drawn ,'off from 'other
parts of the lake,- Causing: sud-
den fall in levels, often at distant
points. `
The memorandum was promp
ted by unofficial reports reach-
ing thehydrographic service of
the. department's surveys and en-
gineering branch thatthe violent
changes in water levels on that
day were due to a tidal " wave,
caused by the moon: • ' r
"This was a misnomer", an ex-
pert said. "Lunar' action had • no-
thing' to do with it". '
The figures from Goderich `are
the official records nearest to the
centre of the disturbance. Unoffi-
cial --reports show -that the seiches
Wei* more pronounced north of
r that town, where levels changed
[four feet in a few minutes..While.
this was a record for Lake Huron,
-it has been exceeded on Lake
Superior.
