DINNER IN ITALY
Thefollowing is quoted from a
'letter received .by the parents of
Capt. R. W. Andrew who is ,pow
Stationed . in Italy with the Can-
adian' Forces:
. "Yesterday .was invited out to
• • dinner at an Italian home here.
Quite ..an experience and they do,
love to entertain but .at present
their resources are very limited..
However I 'think they must have
been saving up as it was almost
too much for me. Had an inter-
preter along with me so were;
able to ,uinderstand each tither•--
otherwise it would have been
rather. humorous. looking .every
"thing up out of a dictionary, But
to get back to the thinner, ;it start-
ed off with their 'national- dish
—macaroni, which was mixed,
with mustard,egg and sauce,
brought in a, heaping' 'plate full.
`When I had finally waded thra
,, and it was . very tasty,' I was
ready to call 'a 'halt, Next dish,
however, was meat and greens.
Well,' I finished that with some
' difficulty and expected that it
would surely be the last, when
they informed .me they were just
starting. Next was french -fried
potatoes small cutlet lamb chop,
'and meat patties (highly season-
ed). By this time I was beginning
,4 to .gasp and every mouthful was
an effort arfd . although I made
a valiant effort finally had to
• give up and Waited in 'suspense
in- case any thing else cropped
up. And sure enough, along came
dessert which fortunately was a
custard of some sort, and then
later oranges and' apples. I was
gasping when Ifinally Moved, a-
way from the table. They told
me it was a special: effort and I
,a quite . we11 believe therm -it was
• even an effo1.t for Y Te.'t
'a reading and Mrs,, L. Crozier
led in. prayer. ' Mrs. 'Benson
Shackleton ..gave the chapter in
the study book. "Foil- all of Life".
