To the raucous notes . of • the
fire siren. and .the , ringing of
church'°bells last Wednesday af-
ternoon : at five /o'clock,• this villi
age marked the surrender of
Italy. The hour, , coincided with
the time ofsurrender in that
country, although the fact was
knownhere at noon hour. •
Few if .any (who did not know),:
connected the siren blowing with
a celebrationlo mark Italy,'s col-
lapse. By_ the extent of th. toot-
ing a major .conflagration -was.
imagined and many suspected
that the' factory was on : fire.
Even the hose reelmade
appearance and without instruc-
tions as to where .to $aka it, the•
reel was hauled as Tarr as the
Post Office before The Brigade
knew what it was all about:

The funeral :of the late Barbara
Anne Culbert was • held at', the-
-home of her parents;- Mr. and'
Mrs A. • D. Culbert, 12th • 'Con-'

September • 9th. The .servicewas
conducted by ' Dr. W. .0.: Rhoad..
The 'many floral •tributes .and
largely' , attended funeral , bore
testimony to the affection and
respect of a host of friends both.
in this ;community and in Wind-
sor where 'Barbara had been,,em-,
ployed for the pasttwo years.
Interment was ' in Greenhill,
cemetery, Lucknow.., The pall-
bearers' were .James Farrish, Wil-
liam Johnstone, James Nelson;
David MacDonald, Basil ' Hogan
and William Campbell.
Barbara' was 'nineteen . years of
age.•-:Shevveas_:bornW Wit. _.Orkney_,.
Saskatchewan and came , East
with her parents in !1936. She at-
tended Lucknow High ,School for
two years, and for the past two
years has 'been employed at
Windsor, where. she was' cashier
for- the A. & P. Company.
She was taken ill while 'at
work on Saturday • and 'within
forty-eight , hofiirs ' had passed
• away. at Hotel .Dieu in .'Windsor.:.
Barbara's . death . • occurred on
Monday,' morning, shortly„ :after
her parents. had been advised of
her critical condition ' and, before
they •could reach her' bedside.
Besides her 'sorrowing parents
Barbara is survived by five 'bro-
thers: Andrew of Windsor, 'Alan,
•Borden, - Elmer and Herby at
home and three sisters, Mrs. Bert I
Ashton (Velma),. Mrs. Marley
