Discovered over 20 years. 'ago,
until recently- only a few ,test
wells were 'put •d:ow-n. For " sev-
eral years a. snarl refinery -oper-
ated 'here during the s:ivnr* ler
months to supply , the, gasoline
and diesel fuel needs of "-nines,
boats' and .aircraft operating in
this area. As'. I look out the win-
dow here, 1 see a,: number of stor-
age tan:: s ranging from very
small 'ones to the largest, 80.000
barrels_
Though 'wonderfulprogress
was made in builr3ing the Alaska
Hig_ 'way ' (a rough road pushed
tnrough over --1.'500 miles.'in eight
months.) the road for building
the pipeline has proved very dif.-
ficult and. progress has .•so far
been disappointing. Running thru
the most diff'icnult kind of muskeg
country 'and having to cross the
mountains . without good passes,
it is expected to be some time yet
before the pipeline. is completed
and oil is flowing westward In
the meantime the job is being
continued with feverish energy,
crews working ,• continuously.
This north country held many
surprises for me, as it did for
most men corning up here. Only
a' few dies south of the Arctic
Circle, it is Much warmer in
sm3mrner than I imagined. Yester-
day was very uncomfortable,the
temperature ..running around ,90
degrees and cooling off very little.
at 'night Although 'this has
been our hottest weather, I im-
agine our . average, temperatures
for the. last - Month hare been
higher than Lucknow's. Of course
it is a country= of great extremes
—long 'cold ;,minters and short,
hot summers- ,
,With - its birches and poplars, its
flowers and bushes,' its bumble
bees arid butterflies, it might pass
for Lake Superior country. But
a foot below '' the surface the
ground is frozen solid.
I spoke of it cooling off very
little at night Actually there is
no night: it is . better termed sun-
down. The stin. drops' behind' the
northern rane of lbw mountains
at this time of year at: about ' 11.30,
in a rosy sunset 'which. moves 'east
a few degrees to become the sun-
rise 6f a new day-.
Our Camp. with Canadian

It' has the advantage of unlimited
