SNOW COSTS
SET NEW HIGH •
At the January session Bruce
County 'Council appropriated the
sum of $120,000 for highway ex-
penditure during the year. The
Department of Highways, how-
ever, gave notice that the expen-
diture must be limited:a $100,000
to be spent entirely for mainten-
ance. and repair 'Work: No road
construction will therefore be un-
dertaken this year and the work
will be • confined largely. to . gen-
eral maintenance, : cleaning out
ditches; surface" treatment, dust
laying with calcium- chloride and
the ' application of acid. killer.
According ,ttq, the report of .En-
gineer Stephenson last winter.
was the " worst experienced in
show removal, the cost being
$15,000 as against $9,300for the.
previous y)ear., Except in' a few
cases where" overloaded trucks.
were operating during the break-
up period the roads came out in
good condition last spring.
A . letter was received from the
Department of 4unicipal Affairs
urging Council- to appoint a spec
iai Committee to propose a list, of
pr-oposed.'works for post war-con4-
ditions in order to prevent, unem-

carried out and the 'following
were named on the committee:
Wm. Shewfelt, reeve of Kincar-
dine Township';' Robert Sloan,
reeve of Elderslie; and the three
members of,•'the Highways Comm-
mittee, Reeves Downs, Elliott and
McTavish.
