Master Ernest Paton, the son of a.
rich farmer of k3ressuative, Franee, en-
livened the tedium of rent day, when
his father's tenants were assembled; by
shooting a hole in his hat and rising a
cry of " murder!' Stra,itway every one
turned out with the • gendarmes and
police to hunt for the would -be -assassin,
and beat up the country very thorough-
ly till dark, when the waggish youth.
confessed bis innocent deeeption. The
local authorities se'ntiiiirt to prison and
fined him roundly, besides amercing
him in coats for employing the gendar-
mes uselessly.
One of the most daring feats ever
achieved by t swimmer was perforined •
at Tonbridge, England, by Prof. Henry
Hoare, who succeeded ii siVirniming a
distanee of two miles with his hancl,
fastened together with handkerchiefs, es
that no effort eould possibly extricate
them ; Itisfeet were dained together

and his eyes blindfolded.

verbatim the following prayed by a girl
at the shrine of Notre Damm---" Oh, be-

A young mati left Piiris, 'a few days
ago, to visit his faintly at Lyons, and
as soon as he had got into the carriage,
he -lit it match by scratching it with his

cent phosphorus penetrated under the
nail, and made a slight burn, to which
lie paid no attention.But after an
hour, the pain became very great, the

The following is a part of a remark-
able prayer offered in a church in Ross -
shire, Scotland, on the last Sunday in
June : " We pray for our aristocracy;

At a meeting in Belfast, Ireland, last

appeared on the platform a scene. of

splashed, and there was fierce fighing in
all pails of the hall, and even on ,the

heads. Finally tho audience all went
out and Biggar delivered an address.
The cause of tho riot was the displea-
sure of the Home Ilailera.at O'Donnell's
supporting the Government on the
Eastern question.

Our readers remember the account given in
those columns of the robbing the grave of the
Ron. Scott Harrison, in•Oldo, last May, the
