Limit your Wants.
From the nature of 'things, the in-
• come of meat of the inhabitantatof the
• earth lee mustlimited, and indeed within
• very narrow bounds. Tho product of
labor throughout the world, if equally
divided, would not make the share of
•'ench individual large. It is inipossiblo• .
that every -one should be tat,isIbid--
rich. But it is by means impossible to
be independent. And what is the way
to compass this—as Burns appropriately
• designates it—"'glorious privilege"
The method is very simple. It consists
in one rule : Limit.your want. Make
them few and inexpensive: To do _this
• would interfere but little with your real
--enjoyment' It is mostly a manner of
habit, Yon require more, or you are
--eatisfied-withiess,just_as you have ac-
customed yourself to the one or the
• other. Limit your wants, estimate
their cost, and never exceed it, taking
pains always to keep inside of your in.•
Thus you will secure your last-
'. ingindependence. Young men, thinkot
this. 'A great deal of the happiness of
your lives depends upon it. After hav-
ing made your money, spend it as you
choese, honestly; but be sure you make
it first.

Rudolph Bourman, a young Swiss,
• arrived in this oity laat Thursday night,
• 135 daya from New Jersey, having
walked the entire distance. Bourman
' left New Jereey on tho 12th of January,
• without a cent in his pocket, determined
to reach San Francisco without cost to.
himself. He walked from the starting
point to Philadelphia, thence to Pitts-
•. burg, Cincinnati St. Louis and thence
along the line dthe Union Pacific and
Central Pacific Railroads until he ar-
rived here. He obtained food by asking
from the men in the section houses
along the line of the railroad aid at al-
most every place lie stopped he was
kindly treate& and was furnished with
something to eat and a place to sleep.
He saye that the Chinese laborers on
the line of the Central Pacific were more
hospitable than the whites ,,of the Union
. Pacific. On one occasion, while cros-
sing the Alkali desert, he was stopped
by six Indians who searched him for
-valuables, but finding he did not have
any on his person left him to perform
his journey alone. Bourman, who is a
- compositor, came here in search of em-
ploynaent.—San Francisco Catifornicer.
WHAT THE PRESBYTERY DID FOR
ADAM.—Of all the 'freaks of the tele-
• gram, this is one of the most laughable.
A young man, when about . to start for
Itis nem parish, was unexpectedly delay-
ed by the inability of his Presbytery to
.ordain him. In order to explain his
' non arrival at the appointed time,
he
sent the following telegrani to the dea-
cons of the church ; "Presbytery lack-
ed a quorum to ordain." In the course
--of-its journey the message got strangely
metamorphosed, and it reached tho as-
toniehed deacons in this shape -"Pres-
• bytery tacked a worm on Adam." The
• sober church officers were sorely discom-
posed and mystified, but after grave con-
sultation concluded that it wag the min.,
isteris facetious way of announcing that
he 404 been married, and aecerdingly
• provided lodgings for two instead ofene.
