RpIey' Livestock Dealer Has Word
To Say On "Assembly Centres"
Publishe
r tucknaw Sentinel, a SO' 'CALIEED assembly point.
Dear Sir; • started in .Kincardine,. I started:
want it to 'be known that back, on an F O . 'basis..
before U.L,S. started in 1953 you ; is surprising• how people,
can remember back that. I al. ' even in the livestock (business*
• ways sold your hogs ' on' an. carttalk so foolish: X. read in one
F.O.B. basis. of the local Papers' .a few weeks
After several Meetings 'with,.
U.L.S, and Ontario Hog Produc-
ersthey" stopped me, by saying
all .expenses, had to ' Ibe put on
the. sheet. T " got the expenses • as
?lowv as possible by selling my
hogs:. F.O.B.,. adding .on 50 cents
per mitt. and taking 50 cents per
ewt, off' as; expenses and along.
" with that. paid . the farmer for
• bringing their hogs into •Ripley,
which was the same as, the mar-
' ket, F.O.B. only 'camouflaged..
My idea of selling hogs F.O.B.
was •that it 'didn't .matter .whatihogs cost, a packer, it is w'hat
he makes other ' packers pay so'.
that they can't outsell him ' ,in
his•. pork products.•
At that time I; was selling hogs
to Modern Packers, Montreal and
. E " tc sen
• 'Swifts. As it •' goes, 'Montreal
• only had to: buy one load ,:of
hogs up in .this part .of the coun-
try. '' to make other packers line
up to that price, because' .Swifts
and Canada Packers were jump-:
ing• •in ',down .around Belleville
'and making them spay up for the
'hogs—in that part tof , the country.
The •only way ;to be able , ;to
do this, in selling ' hogs is, • F.O.B.
But no, they cbuldn't' understand
that or they. • didn't' want to un-
derstand because .;they :didn't
want me selling my' ; own '1 hog-
as I might Ibe.'a little opposition
to them• and that is something.
the U.L.S., or_as_..it-isnow.called

third paragraph ;it read "Udder
'consideration " is whether this
service will • be .•cbn f fined to the
co-operative 'shippingassociation
or made available toall' shippers
in the area"..
I don't • think . they :have to
worry about other ' , shippers in
this area;
"TRI-TOWNSIOP'
Also the • 8th• 'paragraph read
something like this, being a
statement by •.a director of. the
Hog ` 1VIarketing Board, • Wesley
Magwood, "Unless you are ready
to', back your assembly , point;
don't start it'.'. 'I • hope he , meant
as an• organization and not in-::
dividual farmers, because I :know
if I said ;that to,• a farmer. bring

like .,it happened before:. and
lot•+of farmers wonder Why,".the
price 'Should change ;in the mid=
dle . of the week.
• The reason "the" price ,chang-
ed in the middle of theweek was
because 'there were' not • enough
buyers , .who were. 'satisfied and.
!Willing to. support "the' price so
"the" price took` a tumble 'or it
raised up if buyers got anxious
for' hogs.'. •"The" price works 3
ways, up, down , and steady,• and
it is 'the buyers :of hogs who
make "the" price depending on
packing house conditions for.
their supplies and :their. de-
mands.
