Editor Lucknow Sentinel,
Dear Sir
The Case For History
'As time ' goes by. it becomes
more and more apparent tai t ithe
man in the street has a far more ,
important .role to play in our
struggle for. 'world stability than
our political and business lead-
ers. seem to realize. Whether or
not he will be able • to ;play his
part will depend a good deal on
the attitude. he takesto, the study
of history
It, ,has .been,' my . experience , (1),
that generally speakinghistoryis
not the favorite . subject at school
(2)" for most students,, after they,
have ` ,been. ' out Of school for ten
or fifteen . years, .because of the
effort spent learning' a trade or
profession, getting started, on a
'farm oar' in, business; setting up.
a • home, sports,• hobbies, .etc., has
meant that a, .good deal of .the
history .learned. while. at ,school'
has been forgotten. In our , so -
.called material age it is then
pretty difficult . to. "pull. up the
slack" unless', ,some special effort'
is 'made .'to do so.
•.'.SHOWER FOR NEW BRIDE
A , shower was ' held recently
with' •Mrs. . D. A. Hackett as hos-
tess, for her, sister-in-law, • Mrs.
Alvin. I•Iaekett.'A program 'of con..
tests. ' and . sing songs was 'pre-
sided over by 'Mrs. Ewart' Taylor
of • Lueknow. The " address .' was
read by• ' Mrs. . ' Morgan `A Johnston
and . a' Marge' basket of lovely gifts
was carried , in by, Jacqueline
Johnstbri..and Lynda Taylor. •'Mit.
Hackett 'very graciously thanked
the group s.fOr the lovely gifts+
after wthich lunchwas served by
the ;hostess:
An explosion last. 'week gutted,
the interior of a, cabin trailer in,
the village of, Whitechurch,. own=.
ed by Nathaniel Thomipson, The
blast 'caused by accumulation of
gas fumes in the trailer knocked
a telephone receiver .from the •
hook, • :utornatioally.. 'summoning
•the 1 ingharri telephone
eX-
change. The • operator, unable tQ
get a `reply, called W. R, Chap-
man a merchant,. located
general neral . '
directly acrossthe road. Look-
ing
ooking out' his window, he saw, the
trailer .in flames • and 'called, the
111'irigham. Rural I'i,re .•13epartment;
Mr. Thompson, a 'plu. nber•;, Was..
in Lticknow 'at . tt111 time, • ,
• An,. electrical` defect :is ibelieved •
to have ignited, the .gas. Most of
the furniture .was ' destroyed, A
sum i m piney : was. rescued 'from
the • blaze.
To eiarify. 'what. I'm trying to
get at d would- like.... to mention
' Wingham• and Stratford. Wing
ham; is of course the town that
greets its visitors with • a sign
:claiming it is the radio town of
Canada. . • Soon the: additional
proud, claim that it is the tele_
vision, town . of Canada will like-
ly' be. made. ,During the last:. few
years, .the "fine city of Stratford
has gained recognition from coast
to' coast for its :summer festivals.
WhatI
.'.m wondering about these
placesis as to 'how many of. its
citizens . can honestly. ,claim as
much:' interest in' ' a foreign. mini-
sters' conference as in.: television
or ,festivals. 'To. that.' Mr. Public
might ask, why. should ::thea?. To
,that my reply would' be ,that'• at.
a foreign,minister's' conference
our priceless gift offreedommay
sometime be at stake while' the
best heading that television and
festivals , can probably..' come un-
der is that of an improved stand
'ard. of living. •Aetually,' speaking
as a nation, the higher we raise :
our standard of living the' more
likely the..•under-priviliged` nat-.•
ions are to become restless and •
become' dissatisfied • 'with . their
',lot They; are then more .suscept
ible to the teachings of Commun. •
iini ..The more susceptible they ,
'are 'to the teachings ' of Commun-
ism the more difficult it ``isfor
us to win world stability;.to'find
solutions ' to ' such problems is
something that we 'all 'can and.
seemingly. must, share; a part.
"RANCHO •
Editor's Note—"Rancho" 'points
out :that the 'apparent deadlock
at Geneva and the re -arming of
Egypt prompted, the above art-
icle. Although ;he feels- there is'.'
•not much point, in .asking for
tamp -lents ' in ` reply, l e would like
to .seeothers, write. articles 'along
