NOTES AND COMMENTS
GOOD BLOOD .
AND GOOD HEALTH
Hon J. J Curran. jostice of the
superior court of Qa'beo, died suddenly
at Qaebeo on Friday. He was solicitor -
general under Sir John Thompson and
under Sir iii:aekenzie Bowen.
The annual report of the Iaearanee
Branch of the Finance Department,
just paned, shows that the total amount
received in prominens by the fire in-
surance companies during the calendar
year 1908 was $17.027,275, an increase
of $91200 aver 1907, while the total
amount paid for losses was $10,279,455,
an increase of $1,834,414.
The Toronto Telegram must have got
very bilious reoently, tor it chargee Sir
Wilfrid Laurier with bigotry, intoler-
ance and injustice. Sir Wilfrid Laurier
las his faults, one of them being that
he manages to hang on to power too
long, but bigotry, intolerance and in-
justice are notamong them. If we
can't love him we oan at least be fair to
him,—Kingston Standard, Conservative.
After a hearing lasting five whole
days, proceedings in the Weet Peter-
borough election trial were stayed
Saturday morning, Mr. DaVernet, on
behalf of Mr. J. H. Burnham, the
petitioner, withdrawing all charges,
The counter petition, entered[ against
Mr. Burnham by Mr. J. R. Stratton
was then withdrawn. This leaves
North Lanark the only oonetituenoy in
Ontario in whioh the eleotion is dis-
puted.
The total value of the production of
minerals in the Provinoe of Oatario for
the first six months of 1909 was $10,-
649,913, as against $8,082,264 for a simi-
lar period last year. There were shipped
from the silver mines of Cobalt during
the above period 15,360 tone of ore, in-
oalnding concentrates, as againet 9,209
tone in the same period of 1908, the in-
creases in the quantity of silver oontente
being about 45 per cent. Nickel in-
oreaaes 26 per cent. in quantity and pig
iron 44 per cent. Iron ore remained
about the same, and there was a slight
deorease in Dopper.

Is the Result Obtained When Or,
Williams` Pink Pills are Used
To have good health you. must have
good blood. It is only when the blood
is bad that the health is poor. The
blood is the life-giving fluid of the body
—it is therefore an absolnte neoeseity
that it should be kept free from all im•
purities and poisons. To do thie noth-
ing can equal Dr. Williams' Pink Pills
for Pale People. These Pills make new,
rich blood with every dose; they drive
out every impurity—every poison—and
thus give good health. Ooncerning
them Mies Bernadette Lapointe, of St.
Jerome, Qne , eaye:--"For several
years my health was very bad -my
system was completely run down. I
had indigestion almost oontinnaliy; my
heart wee weak ; I had headaohos, and
backaches, and was sore all over. My
blood was very poor and more than
once I was in despair. I tri' • many
supposed remedies but none of them
helped me. One day a frid advised
me to try Dr. Williams' Pink Pills,
telling me that she hafound them
good in a case similar • . mine. I fol.
lowed her advice nd egan taking the
pills. They soon g e me some slight
relief. Encourag by this I continued
their use for several menthe and they
strengthened my whole system. I am
to -day in excellent health and always
keep Dr. Williams' Pink Pills in the
house for if I feel a little out of sorts I
take a box of Pills and am soon alright
again."
Thousands of young girls throughout
Canada suffer just as Mies Lapointe
did. They are siokly all the time and
are totally unable to take the enjoy-
ment out of life that every healthy girl
should. They need a tonin to build
them up—to enable them to withstand
the worries of household or business
duties; to give them strength to enjoy
social life. Snah a tonin is Dr. Wil-
liams' Pink Pills for Pale People.
These Pillo•give blood to bloodless girls;
they strengthen the nerves; banish
headaches and backaches; cure indi-
gestion, rheumatism, heart palpitation
and relieve the many ills of girlhood
and womanhood. Sold by all medicine
dealers or direct by mail at 50 cents a
box or six boxes for $2 50 from The Dr.
Williams' Medioine 00., Brookville,
Ont.
From records being received at Ottawa
from members of cow testing aeaooia-
tions there is apparent a very marked
variation in the earning power of the
various cows in the same herd. There
is every indication of many of last seas-
on's variations being repeated, euoh
totals will show in many oases twenty
five dollars difference between two cows
in the same herd, In some herds this is
inoreaeed to forty dollars. For instanoe,
ln.a herd of 11 cows an eight-year-old
oow gives actually 4,200 lb. milk and
180 ib. fat more than a five-year-old in
the same stable during the same time.
Planing a valve of 20 cents per pound
on the butter, the one oow is thus seen
10 earn over forty dollars more than the
the other.
This is the important point to notice;
there are hundreds of farmete in the
D,wlnion in whose herds net enoh re-
markable differences between cows can
be found, but the owners are probably
unaware of the extent of such differ.

Toronto, Oot. 12.—Oity Cattle Mar-
ket.—There was a steady trade at this
market to -day. At no time was there
any melt about it, but at times a little
draggy, but generally speaking the
oattle were wanted add if the quality
was not on the whole so good as desired,
butchers took what they could get, and
not always at their own prices. The
quotations will show that prices were
steady and quite firm for the beet
bntoher cattle. There is also a good
demand for stockers and distillery feed-
ers and anything choice enough and
heavy enough for export or for choice
butcher was readily bought up at good
figures.
Lambs are firmer,
Sheep steady to firm,
The hog market is weak and lower
than a week ago, but well finished hogs
sold at $8 ted and watered.
The run was 90 cars, with 1,500 head
of cattle, 1,300 sheep and iambs, 1,000
