All three fell about twenty-five feet through a break in the roof of an abandoned mine into a ehallow_pool of water, which was the gathering place of a numerous fam- ily of snakes. The passing of the late John Stewart removes another of the early pioneers of Huron township. His death 000urred at the family residence, Queen street, south side, Kincardine, on Friday afternoon the 20th Angnst. Deceased was born in Killelesgh, Ireland, on March 15th, 1625. In 1846 he came to Canada and for a number of yeare lived in Hastings County. He came to Huron township over 50 years ago and settled on the llth concession of Huron. He was married to Mary Osborne in 1874. The anion was blessed with with a family of one son David H., who lives on the home- stead on the llth of Iiuron, Mrs. John A. Farrell, Huron, and Mrs. Tooker, wife of James Tucker, ex•M,P.P., of Wellington. Mrs. Stewart was a man of remarkable ability and while he took some part in publio life, having been reeve of Huron from 1871 to 1874, he was more noted as a local preacher and a man of great uprightness and piety of life. Items from the "Times" fyles. (From the Thies of Aug. 30, 18S9.) Mr. T. Bell'; new factory has been given a coat of paint, which greatly im- proves its appearance. As will be seen by posters, the mayor has proclaimed Thursday, 5th of Sep- tember, as oivic holiday for this town. Mr. Wm. Dore is erecting a residence, on the Diagonal road, near Mr. D Sutherland's new reeidence. Miss S. Smith, of Conroy, has been engaged to teach the second department of the pubiio school, Conductor Quirk, of the G. T. R., one of the best known Knights of the Punch on the line, is away on his holidays, and will visit Detroit, Chicago and other western cities before his return. Port Elgin's new high sohool will be opened by Hon. G. W. Ross, minister et education, on Monday, Sept. 16th. The public school opened last Monday atter the 'long vacation' with a fair at- tendance, and under the control of the following staff of teachers: let Dept., Mr. W. E. Groves; 2nd, Mise S. Smith; 3rd, Mies S. A. Burgess; 4th, Miss B. H. Reynolds; 5th, Miss J. Cargill; 6th, Mise W. Henderson; 7th, Miss M. Gatley. On Monday we were shown a sample of oats grown on Mr. John Brennan's. lot, which measured 6 feet 10 inches,. were well headed and good plump grain. They were of the white potato oat' variety. Mr. George McKenzie has men at work erecting a building, on the vacant lot opposite Brennan's tannery, in which to press hay. The building will be 46x 100 feet.
