FROM THE Pastor's Desk
PERSISTANCE PAYS
BY Pastor Les Shiel
Bayfield Baptist Church
In the book of GALATIANS chapter 6 and verse 9,
we read these words: "And let us not be WEARY
in well doing, for in due season we shall reap -
If we faint not:"
Someone has well said: "If God has called you to
a task, quitting is never fitting:" Yet who of us
have not trudged through the lowlands of dis-
couragement, looking to every side road for an
opportunity to leave a difficult and frustrating
work? Satan is quick to suggest that you might
as well - give up, go elsewhere, or let some-
one more talented do the job. But remember -
"You are where you are - by God's appointment:"
He has neither changed His orders nor given
you new ones! If you are in this kind of sit-
uation, the noblest expression of faith is a
dogged determination to go on with the task!
A disheartened minister had been serving a
Church for some time with seemingly little
results. One night he had a dream in which he
was trying to break a large gran ite Rock with a
pick -ax. Hour after hour he laboured, but with
no visible results. At last he said in despair:
"It's no use, I'm going to quit!" Suddenly a
man appeared at his side, and asked: "Were you
not appointed to this task? And if so, why are
you going to abandon it?" "My work is in vain,
cried the Pastor. "I can make no impression on
that granite rock!" "That is not your concern;
your duty is to keep at it" replied the stranger.
"The work is yours, but the results are in another's
hands. Work on!" In his dream the man saw himself
taking the axe anew into his hands, and at his first
blow the granite flew into a million pieces! When
he awoke, an unforgettable lesson had been learned.
That "Rock" in his life - or in your life - may
seem harder than tempered steel. Yet if you are
doing God's will, one of these days it will yield
to your steady blows. Remember, PERSISTANCE PAYS!
