THE THEOLOGY OF PENANCE - by Rev. Rob Patrick
The Christian season of Lent has arrived
and with it the traditional season of Penance.
Penance in the Christian sense is suffering
or hardship that, one imposes on oneself or
willingly accepts, in a spirit of faith and
out of love for God.
Penance is not simply human suffering.
Penance is not fasting to trim down for the
coming season at the beach. It is not suf-
fering like a dog with a broken leg. It is
not bitterly enduring deprivation.
Christian Penance is motivated by faith and
inspired by love. It begins and ends with
God.
Penance is natural to man. It gives man
a chance to exercise his free will. By
exercise, an athlete brings his body powers
to a more perfect state. By acts of the will
which penance involves, man can bring his
spirit under his control and strengthen his
will power. St. Paul aptly said, "I do the
things that I will not, and will not the
things that I do."
The will is a spiritual power of man that
needs use and training like any other power
man possesses.
Another reason why the Christian does penance
is that he or she recognizes oneself as a
sinner and the doing of penance is a certain
sign the Christian is sorry for past unchris-
tian behaviour.
The ultimate reason why the Christian does
penance is the desire to become one with
Christ, his desire to share in Christ's
greatest hour - His passion, death and
resurrection, the redemptive act of God's own
Son.
The Christian wants the risen Christ to live
and die again in his body so that the Redemp-
tive act of Christ is perpetuated down the
long corridors of time and so the divine
apology of Christ is ever present before His
Father in heaven.
The penances of Lent only make sense when
looked at with Easter morning clearly in
view.
