FROM THE Pastor's Desk
ADVENT - GOOD TIME FOR NEW START
The Season of Advent is upon us, and once again
marks the closing and the beginning of another
Church Year. We have learned from experience
in life that all great events demand great
preparation beforehand. As the Christian world
looks forward to the joyous Festival of Christ-
mastide, we, as Christians, are reminded that
we must not lose sight of the great truths and
principles which the Season of Advent brings
with it. We must prepare ourselves spiritually
for the coming of the Son of Man. The world
says to us, "Christmas is coming"; the Chris-
tian says, "Christ is coming" - coming not only
as an historical event, but as a living person.
The message of Advent should bring home to each
one of us the consciousness of our shortcomings
and our failures. It should also remind us
that perhaps during the past year our selfish-
ness and our lack of courage in our convictions
have hindered the advance of the Kingdom of
God. Not only in our own lives, but in our
Parish and beyond its boundaries.
I am reminded of what author Leslie Weatherhead
said in his publication: °In Quest of a Kingdom".
"In this poor, broken world, the teaching of
Jesus is the only known philosophy of life which
has never been seriously tried", and he finally
sums it all up by saying that, on the whole,
"man's relationship with God is still wrong".
The Season of Advent presents each one of us
with a fresh challenge. Don't let us treat it
lightly. To know Him better during the next
few weeks before the Christmas Festival ought
to be our firm wish; to be more like Him in
thought, word and deed ought to be our ultimate
goal.
A suggested Devotion might well be the
Collect for the Sunday before Advent:
"Stir up, we beseech thee, 0 Lord, the
wills of thy faithful people, that they,
plenteously bringing forth the fruit of
good works, may be thee be plenteously
rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.". (BCP p:259)

Some residents just found it hard not to
be able to talk to friends on a cold, winter
day. "The isolation in Bayfield is bad
enough without this; exclaimed one lady.
However the mysterious malady just as my-
steriously cleared up. What really happened?
