MANITOULIN DEER HUNTING
Jim Parkins of Zurich and
several friends just re-
turned from a safari into
the woods of Manitoulin
Island in search of deer.
Their purpose was to have
a good time and bring back
a little of that dark meat
for the freezer. They suc-
ceeded in their first ob-
jective but they failed in
the second. No deer,
Apparently the members of
the hunting party saw six
doe deer but no bucks.
Their hunting licences
were restricted to hunting
bucks so the doe bounded
safely on their way.
Jim says that bucks are
really quite clever. (No
slight to you ladies is
intended). If a buck and
doe are travelling through
the woods and they come to
a suspicious looking clear-
ing, the buck will let the
doe go first. If the doe
makes it across safely,
he follows. He probably
figures that if one of them
has to go it might as well
be his dearest.
However, the government
does come to the defense
and aid of the doe by
issuing only a few licen-
ces permitting the shoot-
ing of the lovable female
deer. The bucks seem to
know that they enjoy no
such protection. They
stay deep in the forest.
That's why hunters like
Jim and his friends often
come home without any
dark meat for the freezer.
