Much of my duty time was spent on the night shift. In the darkness and subdued light I would find my eyes adjusting to the point where it was not impossible to perform a great number of nursing tasks without light. Seeing in and through the darkness became the norm for those night hours. Yet when dawn came, and the sun's light brightened the ward, I knew again that it was in light and not in darkness that one saw best. Many would say that the world today is in great darkness. This is a sad fact, but it is not the most tragic aspect. The greatest tragedy is that we have adjusted our eyes to be able to see in this darkness. It is be- lieved that it is only through this darkness that the world can be perosived. Our moral, spiritual and emotional eyesight has become restricted. Trying to see things through the darkness or through badly reflected rays of light has left us with a distorted view of the world, of our neighbour, of ourselves and even God. But just as the dawn came and illumined the hospital ward, so too for the world has the Sun come and made things clearer. That Sun of course is Jesus Christ. Through His light it becomes obvious that our narrow, distorted and fearful view of the world is not the right one. So during this Advent Season let us heed the call of the prophet Isaiah and 'walk in the light of the Lord'. Rev.
