FROM THE Pastor's Desk
REMEMBRANCE DAY IN RETROSPECT
No community which cares is complete without
some reference to the past. The Scottish
author and playright, Sir James Barrie,
who wrote the delightful children's book
"Peter Pan" once said, "God gave His chil-
dren memory so they would have roses in
December." In Bayfield we have a Memorial
Cairn in Clan Gregor Square to remind us of
those who died in past wars. Typical of small
communities it is well cared for. Two years
ago, the Cairn had weathered badly and thanks
to volunteers it was restored. A resident of
the village, Adolf Gerger, a master stone
mason completely restored the deteriorating
structure, added a new cap and the Cairn
Committee, under the chairman Brigadier Fred
Clift, have maintained it ever since.
Last Sunday, under sunny skies, two hundred
people, young and old, took time out of their
lives to remember those who died in wartime.
We call to mind the passage used every
Remembrance Day - "The souls of the righteous
are in the hand of God - they are at peace."
(Wisdom III:v.l and 2) We are asked to
remember those who secured our freedom and
maintained it. Following the placing of the
wreaths and crosses, The Last Post - The
Piper's Lament and The Reveille, the reading
of the name of the Dead, many were moved to
hear once again the words of the poet Lawrence
Binyon from "For the Fallen" read by Canon
Paull, a veteran of World War I...."They shall
not grow old, as we that are left grow old; age
shall not weary them, nor the years condemn, at
the going down of the sun and in the morning -
We will remember them."
I recall the War Memorial of the City of Glasgow,
Scotland. On it are words that burn into the
memory and conscience.
"These died in war,
that we at peace might live.
They gave their best,
so we our best could give."
The great Old Testament Prophet Jeremiah
wrote: "You that have caped from the
sword, go, stand not still" (51:50). What
the ancient prophet's words say to us in
1981 is: "you that have not experienced war,
do not accept things as they are. Do not
stand still in helpless resignation or fear.
Do not put up with things as they are. Work
for peace."
Each year remember those who gave their
lives for us that we and our country might
continue to live in peace. May we always
remember those who silently mourn their dear
ones who died in the service of this Canada
of ours.

The following testament to life was found among
the effects of an Infantry Sargeant of the 1st
Canadian Brigade who perished outside Ortona,
Italy on a day in December 1943. He rests
among 1700 Canadians in the Ortona Military
Cemetary which is beautifully maintained by
the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
Today a bird sang for me.
Today I leaned against the strong trunk
of a living tree.
Today a little lizard ran across my hand.
So I am not alone.
When I get hick to Canada I'll remember this.
I will cherish all of life, for all of life
is really one.
1 will never again be a destroyer, though
that is what Man is.
This is my dream, that we will learn to
live in harmony,
not between man alone, but with the whole
living world of God.
(Quoted in Colombo's 'Little Book of
Canadian Proverbs')
