The majority of Canadians would come to the defense of the Armed Forces, and rightly sc?. Duty and drugs are not compatible components in the life of any soldier worthy of the name. Sometimes the individual is the victim of the system. But not in this case. There is no way that the Armed Forces of any country could tolerate its troops using drugs. Drug users in the forces should be discharged without a moment's hesitation. Drugs render a soldier useless as a competent and responsible member of his team, and even more important, put several and even hundreds of others in danger, to say nothing perhaps of the success of an entire military operation. This writer served for three years in the R.C.N. Active Force and one would hate to think that tthe-.officer, an the bridge or the sailor in the wheel house was stoned during high speed exercises, when the safety of the ship and its entire crew was literally in his hands. When it comes to drugs the Armed Services cannot be too strict. Drug pushers and users have no place in the Service. If they cannot be discharged without severely affecting the numbers necessary to main- tain an effective military presence, ther. we are indeed in sorry shape. In peacetime it is a particularly difficult challenge for every soldier to keep him or herself as a positive and effective member of the nation's Armed Forces. However, to become something less is to deny the mean- ing of the uniform one wears. We want to thank those people who have purchased voluntary subscriptions to The Bayfield Post or Zurich News.
