HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Bayfield Post, 1981-09-23, Page 2Fish Industry Question - What determines the price of fish? Answer - The price of fish is determined by the Market price. The market price is determined by the big fish companies like Omstead's and the markets in large cities like New York and Detroit. From this one can see that a fishery must sell its fish at market price and not at a lower price because the crew would de- mand their share or pay based on market prices. If perch are selling at a market price of $4.00 a pound, they are not going to accept pay at $3.50 a pound. Question - What are some of the major operating problems today? Answer - Diesel fuel is very expensive today. If boats have to travel a dis- tance to and from the fishing area it is expensive. Also the high interest rates make operating with credit clients very expensive. We have to borrow money to pay wages while we wait to be paid for our fish. Question - When does the fishing season end? Answer - The fishing season usually ends around Christmas. During the winter we are open a few days a week selling frozen fish. People who want fish can usually get in touch with us even if we are closed. Editor's Note: This is the first of a series of interviews with people in different industries and businesses in the Bayfield area so we can learn more about ourselves and our neighbour.
