on Tuesday after five weeks' illness.
—Mr, and Mrs. A. A. Esty have mov
ed to town from Wroxeter and have
taken up residence on Frances street.
—Thos. Bastard, a retired farmer,
formerly residing near Exeter, died at
his home in London on Monday, aged 81
years.
—The railways announce single fare
rates for Victoria Day, good going May
21st, 22nd, 23rd and 241h, returning up to
May 26th.
--The annual summer meeting of the
Wingham branch of the Women's Insti-
tute will bo held on Thursday evening,
Jane 17th.
—The reorganization of the Canadian
Portland Cement Co. et Wiarton has
been perfected and the worke will re-
open in a few days.
--Lietowel's total assessment this year
is $886,051, practically the same as last
year. The population is 2,505, an in-
crease of 135 over last year.
—Mr. Jae. A. Vanoamp, who has been
ill for some time with pneumonia, has
almost' completely recover:d and was
able to leave the hospital on Wednesday.
—A number of the ladies of Wingham
attended the anneal District Meeting of
the Woman's Missionary Society of the
Methodist Church, held in Gerrie yes-
terday.
Mr. F. J. Hill returned last week from
Toronto, where he reoertly underwent a
successful operation. His many friends
hope that he Inay enjoy better health
than he has had for some time past.
—A meeting for the reorganization
of the Wingham Lawn Tennis Club
will be held in the Connell Chamber on
Friday evening of this week. All per -
sone interested are requested to attend.
—Will the party who took a new
Christy stiff hat and left one with ini-
tials "T. F." on inside band, kindly
leave new bat at AIex. Rose' Division
Court office, where he can get his own
hat.
—Mr. Wm. Whitoall, engineer on the
evening train of the L. H. & 13., has
puroliased Mr. Jas. Morrison's house and
lot in Pleasant Valley and moved his
family to town from London on Mon-
day.
—Willis & Co.. who recently secured
the sole agency for the Queen Quality
shoes for women, report a good business
in this line. This firm has a good stook
and it will pay ladies to see the Queen
Quality shoes,
—',Che Lucknow Pipe Band held a
very successful concert in Lucknow an
Thursday evening. Piper McDonald
and his two daughters, Misses Mabel
and Flora McDonald, of town, took
part in the program.
—Gipsy Smith, the well-known evan-
gelist, is holding a series of meetings in
Massey Hall at Toronto. A special
excursion Is being run over 0. P. R. to
Toronto on Friday of this week. Re-
turn fare from Wingham is 52.50
—The Annual Excursion to the Model
Farm at Guelph on the W. G. & B.,
Kincardine to Renfryn inclusive, will
be ran this year on Thursday, June 17th
by epocini train. Tickets will be good
to return on regular trains the following
day.

grave that tipped the scale at 1250 lbs.

John Fowler, of the Bluevale road
has returned to Guelph to resume bis
work at the cement with C. H. Oonery.
Mrs Robt. Lockbirt was called to
Toronto on Tuesday owing to the death
of the infant child of her daughter,
Mrs. Grant.
Rev. A. J. Johnston, of Woodstock,
accompanied by hie cousin, Mrs, Chas.
Barber. of town, visited with relatives
near Whiteohuroh. on Monday,
Mr. Chas Johnston, who bas been a
resident of Wingham for some time and
latterly with the Robson Mercantile
Co. left on Monday for Toronto where
he takes a position. Mr. Johnston has
many friends here who will wish him
every success in his new position.
Mr, and Mrs. Wm. Webster, of
British Columbia are visiting with
relatives in Wingham and vioinity after
an absence of twenty-two years. They
see many changes in town and dietriot.

—Mr, J. A. Houston, High School
Inepeotor is making his official visit to
the Wingham High Sobool this week.
—The High School football boys and
the boys of town played a friendly game
on Wednesday evening of last week and
the boys of the hill won out by a score
of 3 to 1. Tho school purpose going to
Clinton to play a game on the 24th of
May.
