Born in Nova Scotia, he beoame a eohool teacher, and coming to Ontario he taught in York County for a few years after which he moved up to Huron County. He was well-known to many of the older people through the County having taught eohool in the several different Townships for nearly 35 years. He was a well-read and educated man, who had many fine parts, but he seem- ed to be out of relation to conditions here; had he encountered a wider field he no doubt would have made a name for himself among the great men of Canada. But he fitted himself into conditions here, and did a great deal in the advancement of the early settlers of Huron. Ile was strictly temperate, in politics he was a staunch Reformer. Of late years he had been living with his brothers on the farm in Hallett, but on their death he came to Clinton and has been living at the home of Mr. Chas. Johnson, Albert St., north. Mr. T. King, veterinary surgeon, has• located at Bradford. Tom's social quali- ties, and his professional knowledge are likely to ensure hie snooeo',. Messrs. John and Thomas Hardie, of- Oulrose left by C. The city of Guelph had $75,000 pro- fit out of the municipal waterworks, lighting and railway plants in 1908. The investment is about $600,000. Last year the tax rate was only 14 mills, and it is expected to be lower for 1909. In fact it ie being boldly proclaimed that if Guelph keeps straight ahead on her municipal ownership program, the time will come when there will be no tax rate at all. The death of Alexander- Murray, aged 71 years, occurred at the homestead, lake shore north, Kincardine Township, on Monday, the 6th inst. Deceased was one of the earliest settlers in the town- ship, having come here about 58 years ago. He came from Zorra, Oxford Co., where so many able men of Soottish descent were born and came to Bruce. Goderioh Township was doing itself proud on Wednesday of last week in the way of weddings, no fewer than four of its fair daughters being led to the marriage altar. A very quieb wed- ding took plane at the Leeburn and Union mango in Goderioh, when Mies Sarah J. Bell and Mr. Oliver F. Edwards, both of the 'township, were united in marriage by Rev. J. Hamilton. The bride wore her travelling suit of navy blue broadcloth with hat to match and the happy couple left on a trip to Wind- sor and Detroit. Another wedding was that of Miss Rose Jane, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Prouae, of Gar- den Park Farm, Huron Road, to Jona- than Thompson, a prosperous young farmer of Raglan, Ont.
