as to whether he or the landlord will
do the wiring. Well, it must be one

Ore way or the other every business l

HANDLING THE APPLE CROP
Western Ontario, d'myear, has
one. of • the best apple crops in its
history. This is true of *the quality
as well as the quantity. The summer
' was unusually favorable for the prq.-
duction of fine clean apples, and the
damage by worms and spot is - much
less 'than usual. Even orchards that
have not been pruned nor sprayed
have produced fruit of a fine quality.
But it is said .that "much of this
fine crop will go to n aste on the
ground ur on the trees. This is large-
ly due, to the scarcity• of barrels or
voxes in which to pack and ship. Bar-
rels have been selling at $1.50, and
coopers have been -e;,rning from $75
to $100 per week, but even these
fancy sums fail to produce barrels
enough. The r•ackers are running out
Iof barrels and the csoJ ers are run-.
Hing out of stock.
T meet Cie situation Messrs. An-.
derson and McQuillin• have been ship-
ping large quantities of apples to the
West in bags. This is something of
an experiment. The bags filled with
app]es are carefully packed - -in the
car, a thick layer of straw or chaff
being put on the floor and between
the tiers of bags, which are 'set on
end.
Good apples are also being shipped
in: balk -loose in the car -to points
in Quebec.
Mr. 'Joynt is ' not operating his
evaporator this s anon. He found
the labor problem too: difficult to
solve. Minch of the-jabor which used
to find employment at the evaporator
is this year engaged by the flax Mills.
