THE WASTE B1 !'IME '
It is - sa:d that of all ttha countries
in the world Canada is the heaviest
loser by tire. The Dominion Fier
Commissioner says tlu►t per cent
of the ,fires are due to carelessness,
and therefore are lireventable. One
would think this scarcely j *sible,
but it appears to be the case—:5 per
cent of the enoriuous annual tire
waste due to careIe snes•.
For a number of years the Domin-
ion Fire Comiwissioner and the Fire"
Marshal of Ontario have been put-
ting forth great ' efforts to lessen the
fire waste. Their method is by edu-
cating the people to be more thought-
ful and careful.
- So important is the natter regard-
ed that the Governor General has is-
sued a proclamation setting apart
October 9th of this year as "Fire
Prevention Day.- • I n the cities and
large towns public meetings will be
held ar,:l addresses given on Fire
Prevention, while ' throughout the
country lessons on Are prevention
subjects will be given in the schools.
. The Deputy Fire Marshal of Ont-
ario is also using the newspapers ex-
tensively to impress upon the public
the need of exercising greater eau-
tion in the use of _ fire. Lighted
matches, cigarettes, cigars carelessly
- thrown away, hot ashes deposited in
