HIGH PRICED TEACHING
In Small Schools Pupils Cost $100
Each per Year
The Chesley..Enterprise gives the
following illustration of the high cost
,of teaching in small- country schools:
There are only 7 boys and girls
attending Scone school and the cost to
th • section is, apProximately, $800 or
an average of $114 to gve each pupil a
pritnary education for one year. There
iOn't much rivalry in classes ina
school with such a small attendance.
In Chesley last year our public
'school with an attendance of 300
cost $6,894, or about $23 per pupil.
If the 7 Scone pupils were driven to
Chesley ,they could be educated for
$1lil or a saving of. $639 to the rate-
payers of Scone section. This is
.hr.sed on the assumption that the
,ixtrents drove their children to and
fr.= school each day, and so far as
th s winter is concerned small child-
rtsi could not even attend their
hone schools regularly on account of
th' storms and cold weather unless
dr:ven by their parents or ,brothers.
Thore are many strong arguments
in support , of consolidated .schools
and Scone school this very winter
furnishes one of the very best. The
scarcity of qualified teachers in
rural schools is another reason why
con-;olidated schools would work to
better advantage than the slimly -at-
tended country schools. The rape
payers in sections that have just
finished paying for the erectio of
tie* school will lOik'askaneeat project to start paying for a
consolidated school, but with rural
depopulation comes the insistent de-
mand for the community school at
some central point.
