we°were not allowed outside the camp
bounds and during those weeks we had
over sixteen thousand cases in hospital.
I volunteered for work in the hospital --
and spent several hours each day look-
ing after these who were on the "danger
ously ill' lift. About two hundred , of
our. boys died but that I think was
a very low percentage considering the
number of cases: 1 conducted mnst.of
the funerals. Lad fuuershreeideest
every day for eight weeks. Some days
I had 8 or 10 One day I buried 14. h
was a trying work. And tben I had to
write to parents or wife or next-of-kin
In a few weeks an answer would -conte
back from the mother perhaps, asking
several questions "What were her boy's
last words?" "Did he get the last letter
she wrote?"' "Did he sluffe t much.etc.
Well you know how difficult it was for
pie to answer he r questions, seeing that
I visited perhaps hundreds in the one
day. It was impossible for. me to know
w
who they were. Some.ere -loo l=ick to
tell ore._ But I had to send back an
answer a some kind I have written
hundreds of letters. It was fine to get

inothere. It is now I realize more than
ever before that all the suffering was
not over here in France on the battle-
fields. The loved ones at home suffered
perhaps more than these who were in
the thick of the fight. The wives and
mothers of Canada have antlered much

ed indicate they have borne it patiently
And their courage and quiet trust when
the blow came helped to -cheer these
who were left and to make them more
worthy of that trust. The women or
Canada are worthy of all praise.
When the quarantine was lifted at
Hramshott 1 was sent to Freushaiu
Pond Canip, and it bad, been put under
quarantine the day before I came The

only Padre in camp—the only Prote-t-
ant Padre—and my hands were full.
We sent all the serious caeca to 1'.ram-
sbott hospital and only kept the mild
cave there. After three weeks at Frena -
ham fond the camp broke up and th

which 1distributed . among the. hoys.
in many of these socks there were nr,t.es
from those who knitted ,them, sugar in
some, chewing gum,, cigarettes, etc.
Some were from 1Vrndsor, Walkerville,
Owen Sound,stveral towns in Oot.,
Alberta, B. C., etc. I was wondering it
