The Canadian Northern Railway is
asking Parliament for an extension of
time for the commencement of several
projected lines, among them being a line
from Waahago to Kincardine. If this
line goes ahead. it can hardly help paaB-
ing through Walkerton and Mildmay.

States Senate to make the salary of
the President $100,000 together with

A report has been received to the
effect that Miss Ethel Gillies, formerly
of Chatham, has come in for a fortune
of $200,000, left by a patient whom she

costs the township less now than under
the old system, even after paying for

Mr. Win. Johnston, St.. Marys, when
in town last week, told the Advocate
that when he was clerk of Blanshard
in 1860 there were 13 taverna licensed
in the township. In 1872 there were
11, and to -day there is not one, al-
though local option was never sub-
mitted to the electors. This is evidence
that the drinking custom is going out
of use, and that every evil will find its
own cue without resorting to legieta
tive enactments.—Mitchell Advocate.
Lynchings in the United States dur-
ing 1908 numbered 65, against 51 in 1907
and 68 in 1906, ninny of the oases, how-
ever, were accompanied by rade riots,
in whioh many were killed, and the an.

was intensified, for nearly all the per-
sons lynched were negroes and all but
two of tbo cases occurred in the south-
ern states. As in previous years crimes
or alleged Crimea, against white women
and murders caused most of these Sum -
nary executions.
