Safe driving starts with you Huron Expositor Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) want to remind motorists to monitor their speed as the area begins experiencing an early dose of winter weather conditions including poor visibil- ity and slippery roads. Last week, police responded to 13 motor vehicle collisions dur- ing the first 24 hours of snowfall, with the majority attributed to driver error. Incidents included vehicles sliding off the roadway into trees and ditches, as well as drivers carrying too much speed into inter- sections, not allowing them to stop in time. "We cannot control the weather. However, you can control the speed of your vehide," Huron County OPP Sgt. Dale Bray said in a press release following last week's heavy snowfall. "Safe driving starts with you, prevent a crash and slow down:' Huron County OPP offers the following tips for winter driving: Always check with your local media outlet, Environment Can- ada or the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) before heading out on the road. If a snowstorm is imminent, plan your driving time to reflect the best driving conditions. Reducing your speed on snowy and slippery roads will improve your stopping distances. If you see snow, go slow. Switch to winter tires for added fraction and stopping ability. If you have to stop for any reason, turn on your hazard lights and make sure you are well out of the traveled portion of the road- way. Whenever possible, pullinto a driveway or parking lot rather than the shoulder of the roadway. If you have to get out of your vehicle, ensure there are no other cars approaching and do so in safety. If you end up stuck in ditch and need to keep your motor run- ning, make sure your exhaust is clear of snow to prevent carbon monoxide from entering the vehicle. Carry an emergency survival kit in your vehicle. Always tell someone where you're going and they can expect you to return, call them if you're going to be late.
