Huron East was the evening's big win- ner with eight awards presented to com- panies from Seaforth and Vanastra, includ- ing the night's top honour Huron County Manufacturer of the Year, going to Sun - North Systems Ltd. The evening began as guests entering the Seaforth and District Community Cen- tre were treated to a mini -trade show fol- lowed by a locally sourced dinner pre- pared by Cardiff's BBQ Catering of Brussels. Hosted by Wes MacVicar, the night kicked off with greetings from several spe- cial guests including Huron -Bruce MP Ben Lobb and MPP Lisa Thompson. Addressing the crowd, Thompson explained how poignant the evening's awards had become due to the recent announcement of Heinz closing down its Leamington operation. "That's 800 jobs and so many negative ripple effects, we can't even begin to think of them all," she said, adding how special Huron County is, due to its foundation of small business which bring jobs to the local communities. "The celebration tonight is about innovation, about creating jobs and sustaining a quality of life that we all appreciate:' Dale Donaldson of Everspring Farms took the stage as the keynote speaker, shar- ing his views on how the diversity of recent food trends throughout the food industry relates to potential manufacturing oppor- tunities and challenges within Huron County. The evening got into full swing as four local apprentices were awarded $1,000 scholarships sponsored by the United Communities Credit Union. Huron Manufacturing Association chair Frank Palen said he was pleased with the turnout, adding anytime the association is able to get so many manufacturers and business people together is a great time for the community. "We had good support from our local politicians and that was great too," he said. "A night like this puts what everybody's doing front and centre and it shows people and their peers exactly what's going on in their neighbourhood' Get your flu shot Free and close to home Seaforth Thursday, November 28, 2-5 p.m. Seaforth & District Community Centre 122 Duke Street For ages 6 months and up.
