Local municipalities
receive funds to protect
drinking water sources
Liberals have pledged $13.5 million
over next three years
A number of local municipalities were some of the 37 in
the region to receive funds from the provincial government
to help protect drinking water sources.
Central Huron, Huron East and North Huron will receive
protection grants of $87,500, Morris-Turnberry $75,000, Blue -
water $68,459 and the township of Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh will receive $65,907.
The Ontario government announced last week that the 37
municipalities in the region would receive at least $1,476,271
in total to help them implement local actions to protect
drinking water sources.
"This is part of the province's commitment of $13.5 million
over the next three years to help support smaller, rural
municipalities implement their source protection plans," a
press release stated.
Source protection planning was a recommendation from
the Walkerton Inquiry.
In 2000, seven people died and more than 2,000 became
sick after drinking contaminated water supplied by the Walk-
erton Drinking Water System.
"We are taking care with source -to -tap protection of drink-
ing water so we never have another Walkerton," said Environ-
ment Minister Jim Bradley in the press release.
The release added that municipalities across the province
are taking steps to protect wellhead areas and water intake
zones such as upgrading fuel tanks to provide more protec-
tive spill containment and engineering steam banks to pro-
tect water from run-off and erosion.
Municipalities will also develop education and outreach
programs about threats to their local drinking water supplies
and best practices for dealing with these threats.
