Dr. Jan Owen of Zurich speaks to attendees of the Busts and Bottoms event at the
MacKay Centre on Thurs., Oct. 24. Owen was speaking on the importance of getting
screened for breast, colon and cervical cancer. The event was a partnership between
the South West Regional Cancer Program, IODE Maple Leaf Chapter, Shopper's Drug
Mart in Goderich, Huron County Public Health and the Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital Foundation.
physician Dr. Jan Owen and Ruth -Ann
Ogilvie of Huron County Public Health.
Gail Trewhitt of IODE Maple Leaf
Chapter said the event was in recognition
of October being Breast Cancer Screen-
ing Awareness Month and also is in line
with the goal of their organization to help
improve the lives of women.
She noted all the cancers that the event
focused on are "preventable" and some-
times people just need a gentle
reminder.
"We forget to take care of ourselves,"
Trewhitt said.
Owen said the number of new cases
and fatalities from breast, colon and cer-
vical cancer are much lower in Canada
than some other countries, but more can
still be done.

"We have come a long way, this is why
it's important you know about screen-
ing," Owen said.
Owen informed attendees on why
screening is important and how they are
performed for each type of cancer.
"It catches things we may not see,"
Owen said.
She added that while the number of
citizens who are choosing to get screened
is improving, they should be higher.
"We should have those numbers up
near the 100% mark," she said.
Ogilvie spoke on the HPV virus, which
is one of the leading causes of cervical
cancer.
Trewhitt said they were pleased with
the turnout on a night full of pouring rain
and near freezing temperatures.
