Owen was speaking on the importance of getting screened for breast, colon and cervical cancer. The event was a partnership between the South West Regional Cancer Program, IODE Maple Leaf Chapter, Shopper's Drug Mart in Goderich, Huron County Public Health and the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital Foundation. physician Dr. Jan Owen and Ruth -Ann Ogilvie of Huron County Public Health. Gail Trewhitt of IODE Maple Leaf Chapter said the event was in recognition of October being Breast Cancer Screen- ing Awareness Month and also is in line with the goal of their organization to help improve the lives of women. She noted all the cancers that the event focused on are "preventable" and some- times people just need a gentle reminder. "We forget to take care of ourselves," Trewhitt said. Owen said the number of new cases and fatalities from breast, colon and cer- vical cancer are much lower in Canada than some other countries, but more can still be done. Owen informed attendees on why screening is important and how they are performed for each type of cancer. "It catches things we may not see," Owen said. She added that while the number of citizens who are choosing to get screened is improving, they should be higher. "We should have those numbers up near the 100% mark," she said. Ogilvie spoke on the HPV virus, which is one of the leading causes of cervical cancer. Trewhitt said they were pleased with the turnout on a night full of pouring rain and near freezing temperatures.
