Agency The Virtual High School have part- nered with Childcan to deliver a new program that provides Online Learning Bursaries for kids coping with cancer. The inaugural 5K Run4Kids in Bayfield saw 157 runners participate. The race ambassador was Will Frassinelli, a 12 -year-old brain tumour survivor. Collectively, $12,924.65 was raised for Childcan and the new Online Learning Bursaries Program. VHS covered all costs for the event so that 100% of the proceeds are donated to Childcan and the online learning program. The bur- sary fund will cover teacher payments for each course registration and VHS will cover all administrative costs asso- ciated with the course. This new partnership offers a solu- tion that enables senior elementary stu- dents and high school students to con- tinue their education that is available at any time and in any place and at their own pace. Having an opportunity to learn at your own pace is a welcome distraction when you're a kid living with cancer! "At VES and VHS, I am just like every- body else. I can go at my own pace and feel good about myself. Everybody there wants me to be successful, and this helps me to believe in myself again. Every kid should be able to feel this way, especially the ones whose lives aren't so easy," said Frassinelli. Contributed photo The inaugural 5K Run4Kids in Hayfield raised $12,924.65. Funds will go towards Childcan and the new Online Learning Bursaries program at Virtual High School. "When kids have to be away from school for lengthy periods of time for life saving treatments this changes the dynamics with their peer groups. One thing kids want to do is to just be 'nor- mal again' when they return to school; but many will face challenges from effects of treatment not to mention many months of lost time, while their friends move forward," said Marianne Hebb, executive director of Childcan. Added Stephen Baker, principal of Orr Insurance & Investment and Huron Insurance Mangers Group merge Goderich and Seaforth brokerages involved in deal Orr Insurance & Investment and Huron Insurance Managers Group (HIMG) have signed a deal that will see several brokerages, including locations in Goderich and Seaforth, under the Orr name. This makes Orr a leading brokerage in the region. Orr is a fourth-generation independent brokerage based in Strat- ford since 1895, and owned and oper- ated by brothers Jeff and Rick Orr. HIMG is a cluster of six brokerage busi- nesses consisting of Lyons & Mulhern Insurance Brokers in Goderich, Sea - forth Insurance Broker in Seaforth, Elli- ott Nixon Insurance Brokers in Blyth, Kleinknecht Insurance Broker in Lin- wood, and Sholdice Insurance Brokers in Brussels and Chatham. The transaction was finalized at all seven locations on Fri., Nov. 1. Rick Orr said the company was look- ing to expand. "We were looking for an opportunity to grow Orr's market presence, focusing on the area we live in and support around Stratford. Joining Orr and HIMG takes us from being a successful local brokerage to a leader in the province. This expansion increases our collective leverage with insurance and investment providers, which will in turn benefit the clients we serve." His brother Jeff added, "We saw that HIMG and Orr would be a good fit because of similarities in size, product ranges and emphasis on personal serv- ice. We're especially pleased that the HIMG principals and their staff are staying on as we continue to grow the company together. We'll have the same great people with even more to offer our customers and their families!' Wayne Lyons of Lyons & Mulhern in Goderich says, "Like Orr, the HIMG group are all family businesses and vis- ibly involved in our communities. It's good to know that we have found the right partners to carry on protecting our clients for future generations." Virtual High School: "Life is tough even under normal circumstances. To layer cancer on top of a child's life and have it interfere with the normal developmen- tal processes all kids go through would be particularly devastating. VHS does education differently. Our flexible approach to education will allow the type of access to education that kids coping with cancer need. VHS is extremely pleased to con- tribute our expertise and administrative services to help these kids!' Over 10,000 children in Canada are presently receiv- ing cancer care across this country; 4,000 of them are in Ontario, and 1,700 new cases will be diagnosed in Canada this year. Virtual High School is a private online high school that has been issuing OSSD credits since 2002. VHS is recognized and inspected by the Ministry of Education. The school also offers a selection of elemen- tary school courses through Virtual Elementary School. Teachers at VHS are mem- bers of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) and pro- vide feedback and support to students as they progress through their courses. 06,001044.40.
