An educator for 30 years, Sygrove began teaching at Victoria Public School in 1971 when he and his wife Louise first moved to Goderich. During his career, Sygrove has received a Masters Degree in Education as well as a Specialist in Special Education, and has previously served as principal at three elementary schools - Blyth, Victoria and Zurich. He is currently serving in his second term as a trustee. Sygrove stated, "I would like to give thanks to my fellow trustees for giving me the opportunity, and indeed the honour, of serving as chair of the board for the upcoming year. Having been involved in education for quite some time, I have in the past referred to the good ole days of education, and they were indeed good. But, I have to admit, in the past few years as a trustee, and more importantly as a grandfather, I've grown to appreciate the even better new days of education. Much has changed. Education has evolved. He went on to explain how, though student achievement is still a major focus of education, schools have begun to show more concern for the whole student, recognizing the importance of student well- being in all aspects of their life, not just in academics, as well as promoting students' rights to feel safe and accepted. According to Sygrove, trustees need to incorporate the essential skills for student success; creativity, communication, collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving in their own work as well. "As board, we must focus our efforts to ensure our students have the best possible educational experiences and every opportunity to achieve in a safe, caring and inclusive learning environment," he said. "We will face challenges in the upcoming year no doubt. But, following a guiding theme - none of us alone is as good as all of us together - I feel confident we have the people throughout our system to meet these challenges." Trustee Julie Moore, representative for Perth East and an avid volunteer in her community, was elected as vice -chair. n• Trustee Julie Moore, representative for Perth East was elected vice -chair and Al Sygrove, representative of Northwest Huron, was elected chair of the Board of Trustees Dec. 10.
