Huron Expositor, 2013-12-18, Page 3Assault charges brought against Huron East mayor dismissed Whitney South Huron Expositor The case against Huron East mayor, Bernie MacLellan, has been dismissed, almost a year after he was charged of assault following a dispute over a trailer. The mayor had been charged with two counts of assault with a weapon after an alleged incident involving a mallet took place at the Lakeside Flea and Farmers Market in Ashfield-Col- borne-Wawanosh Twp. on Dec. 12, 2012. The charges were dismissed in Goderich court Dec. 9. According to MacLellan, Ontario Court Justice R.G.E. Hunter dismissed the charges after the Crown told court there was not enough evidence to continue. "I got a call notifying me the Crown had reviewed the information and were asking for the whole thing to be dismissed," he said, adding even though he was told he was not required to appear for the dismissal, he thought it was appropriate to attend. "It was very anti -climactic, it took about 30 seconds and it was over." Testimony from the couple involved was presented to the court in July, but when it was discovered the trial was going to last longer than just the one day, it was adjourned until Dec. 11. The decision to dismiss the charges means the court will not hear from the remainder of the Crown's witnesses or those of the defence. MacLellan explained he was both happy and frustrated now that the case is over. "I'm happy about the fact that the ordeal is behind me, from that stand- point, but I'm really frustrated about the entire process," he said, adding his legal council told him this kind of case wouldn't normally make it to court, but it was a different case due to his status as a public figure. "They didn't want to show any favoritism at all and that's why I got dragged through the ringer." #51 FOSTER FAMILIES NEEDED FOR Flu:on-Per th CHILDREN & YOUTH Chicrin lAsaccerr Help Children Iron Your Community Fix ilraolmotlort Coil rho Hum -Penh chili/ten Ala Perth County (Deanie Jardine) 511-271-62g0 or 1800-668-S0N Huron County (Deanie Jardine) 57:9-524-753 or 1 -M -265-519D Wednesday, December 18, 2013 • Huron Expositor 3 eitmber — YOH LAI len441le I# • Arial COOLY OinthreeS 7:464-av- 4!1r:•1- _Rig hawked' $ 1,500,00 icicipakirs Photo submitted Good neighbours The Seaforth branch of Meridian Credit Union recently raised $1,500 for the Huron County Christmas Bureau through their Good Neighbourhood Program.
