Grocery store set to open Friday

With the grand opening just
days away, it's easy to feel the
excitement in the air, as Seaforth
residents get ready to welcome
back their local Foodland.
In a little over seven months,
the town grocery store has gone
from smoldering ash to a com-
pletely upgraded and modern
building ready to kick off a new
era for the downtown core.
According to owner, Steve
Delchiaro, getting the store
completed in such record time
has been both exciting and
nerve wracking.
"There's a lot going on," he
laughed. "But what it comes
down to is - I hope it's exciting
for the people in Seaforth to
have the store back after so long.
We're looking forward to getting
back to seeing our old custom-
ers again and servicing the com-
munity like we always have."
The improved Seaforth Food -
land will feature several new
services and an expanded
product line, but that doesn't
mean you won't be able to see
some familiar faces.
"All my employees are coming
back, said Delchiaro. "With the
exception of a few students who
have gone off to college, essen-
tially all the staff is returning."
A relief for those who feared a
new store might not have the
same hometown feel as its
predecessor.
The ribbon cutting ceremony
is set to take place Friday, and
will include a presentation to
the local fire department; a
group Delchiaro says often gets
taken for granted.
"We say that they're volun-
teers but really they're profes-
sionals. These guys stick their
neck out on the line," he

explained, adding not only local fire
fighters but also some from Clinton
and Mitchell helped put out the store's
fire back in April. "We're going to do a
check presentation to them and hope-
fully they'll be able to buy some much
needed equipment like imaging
cameras."
Delchiaro says he knows losing the
store had a huge impact on the people
of Seaforth and he's more than ready to
get back to business.
"Nobody had any way to get grocer-
ies without leaving town and it hin-
dered the community that way," he
said. "And if you have to go out of town
to get groceries on the weekend, you'll
going to do your other shopping out of
town too."
A fact that was all too real for down-
town as many merchants saw a drop in
sales and a slow summer season.
According to Carolann Doig, chair of
the Seaforth BIA, it was evident Main
Street businesses suffered without the
kind of draw provided by having a gro-
cery store in town.
"I don't think people miss the water
till the well runs try," she said, adding
several merchants were able to pick up
the slack as far as bringing in extra
product they wouldn't normally carry
in order to help out.
Doig hopes the Foodland opening
will not only help people from Seaforth
appreciate what they, but maybe even
bring in some new customers.
"We're hoping people from out of
town will come see this new state of
the art Foodland and it's very exciting,"
she said.
The festivities get under way this
