Leading the way in local soccer

When the husband and
wife team of Dan and Caro-
lyn Bachert took over Sea -
forth minor soccer this year,
it wasn't in search of any
award.
"We've worked for the past
four or five years with Sea -
forth soccer, but this was the
first year we took over the
executive," said Dan. "We
definitely enjoyed it"
The Bacherts were hon-
oured Thursday night with
the Service for Sports Award
during the Ag Society's citi-
zenship awards ceremony
on Sept. 11.
"We were very honoured
and very shocked," said Car-
olyn, adding it was a parent
of one of the Seaforth players
that nominated the pair.
A longtime soccer family,
the Bacherts have four young
players at home, Alex, 15;
Dakota, 13; Colton, 11 and
Olivia, 7.
For the Bacherts, soccer is
a great way to keep their kids
active.
"Children nowadays cer-
tainly don't get the physical
activity they used to years
ago," explained Dan. "It's a
few hours out of the day
where they're not going to be
in front of screens and learn-
ing new skills, enjoying the
outdoors.

A true
humanitarian

As is the case of many who
volunteer their time, Anne
Sharp does not do it for
recognition.
However, Sharp did gra-
ciously receive some acknowl-
edgement recently in the form
of the Seaforth Agricultural
Society's Humanitarian
Award.
It was one of three citizen-
ship awards handed out by
the Ag Society at a reception
held on Sept. 11.
Sharp sits on the board of
the Seaforth and District Food
Bank as a representative of
First Presbyterian Church and
is heavily involved with the
food bank's community gar-
den, which aims at helping
clients grow their own
produce.
Sharp has a background as
a horticulturist, so this role fits
well for her.
"It's been a really enjoyable
learning experience," Sharp
said, adding she was very
pleased when she heard she
was receiving the award. "I
think it is a tremendous
honour."
For Sharp, she is just play-
ing her part in the good of the
community.
"It takes everyone to make a
community," she said. "It's
important for everyone to do
as much as they can...it what
keeps us together'
She called Seaforth a "very
close-knit and welcoming"
community.
"When there is trouble, eve-
ryone digs in to help," she
added.
In addition to her work with
the food bank, Sharp volun-
teers with several other causes
including the campaign com-
mittee with the United Way of
Perth -Huron.

For the love of the game

Tom Devereaux has a lot
more on his plate than just the
roll of friendly neighbourhood
chiropractor.
Involved with the Seaforth
Curling Club for over 10 years,
his love of the game quickly
turned into a completely dif-
ferent role.
He explained as times were
tight for the club, volunteers
were needed to help run the
rink and keep everything
operational.
"It all started with the sport,
and then it turned into so
much more," he said, adding
when he joined the executive
his eyes were opened as to
how much really goes in to
running a club."
For all his hard work with
the club, Tom became the
recipient of the Civic Ser-
vice Award at the Seaforth
Agricultural Society's Citi-
zenship Awards on Sept.
11.
"It's humbling because
being on the executive, and
the church and hockey, you
see there's a lot of people who
volunteer and deserve this
award," he said. "It's a real
honour:'
Tom went on to explain that
like in most small towns, Sea -
forth sees it's share of volun-
teers, helping with everything
from service clubs to sports
teams.
"No volunteer does it for
recognition, and they don't do
it for pay," he laughed. "But
you get a lot of satisfaction
and you meet a lot of great
people
