On Aug. 22, the Liberal party of Can-
ada approved Dr. Maarten Bokhout of
Clinton as a nomination contestant in
the federal riding of Huron -Bruce.
Bokhout has lived and worked as a
physician in Huron County since 1987.
He has been site chief of Clinton Public
Hospital for the past four years. He is
the acting Medical Officer of Health for
the County of Huron.
According to press release, he is a
frontline rural physician who, in addi-
tion to his family practice, works in the
emergency department and inpatient
unit of Clinton Public Hospital. He
delivers babies, teaches medical stu-
dents and residents as adjunct profes-
sor of family medicine at the University
of Western Ontario, is the medical
director of Huronlea Home for the Aged
in Brussels, Ontario, and serves as one
of Huron County's coroners.
The press release stated the regard-
less of the election process; Bokhout
plans to begin stepping down from
some of these positions in the upcom-
ing months.
Upon completion of his medical
training at the University of Toronto,
he worked for several years as a phy-
sician and Medical Officer of Health in
Northern Newfoundland and Labrador,
and still serves as a locum physician in
St. Anthony, Newfoundland on a regu-
lar basis when needed.
Since 2006, he has provided financial
and administrative support to three
schools and a preschool in Ng'Ombe
Compound, Lusaka, Zambia, enabling
about seven hundred children who
would otherwise not be able to afford
elementary and secondary schooling to
complete their primary and secondary
education.
Since 2007, he has provided financial
support for one of two medical clinics in
Ng'Ombe compound, serving a popula-
tion in excess of 70,000 people. He has
travelled to Africa on a regular basis to
oversee the operations of these
projects,
most recently last November.
Born in the Netherlands, Bokhout
moved to Canada with his family in
1957. He has lived in Ottawa, West-
brook, Kingston, Toronto, Flower's
Cove, Forteau and St. Anthony before
settling in Huron County.
He currently lives near Blyth on a
100 -acre farm. Proceeds from farming
operations are donated to the Canadian
Foodgrains Bank. He is married and
has five grown children.
In the press release, Bokhout said he
welcomes the opportunity to contest
the Liberal candidacy for MP with pro-
fessor Allan Thompson.
"Professor Thompson and I provide
contrasting approaches to serving the
residents of this riding. I believe
choice is important in the process of
candidate selection, and I thank the
Liberal Party of Canada for giving me
the privilege of campaigning as a quali-
fied nomination contestant for Huron -
Bruce," said Bokhout.
