Centenaires hand Clinton first win of the season
For the Expositor
There is no escaping the
elephant in the room for the
Huron East Centenaires -
when will that first win come?
For the fans inside the Sea -
forth arena, and most
involved in the team, it would
have been a sweet one if it had
come against Highway 8
rivals, the Clinton Radars.
Unfortuntately, it wasnt
meant to be and the Cents fell
to Clinton Saturday night 8-5
in front of another large
crowd.
The Centenaires played
most of the game within strik-
ing distance of the Radars, but
mistakes and costly penalties
in the second and third peri-
ods were the difference.
In a league that bosts ath-
letes who have played at Jun-
ior A, NCAA and even Pro lev-
els, mistakes lead to goals.
This past week, the team
made a strong move to bring
in some leadership behind the
bench, securing long time
coaches Murray Henderson
and Herb Kewley.
Both Kewley and Hender-
son have sons playing for the
Centenaires, as well as years of
coaching and understanding
of the path this team is on.
"This was something we
started working on when Scott
(Henderson) decided he
wanted to play as opposed to
coach this season," said team
president, Bill Tremeer.
Henderson had orginally
planned on coaching, but still
felt the desire to play hockey.
The team put general man-
ager Tim McNaughton in as
intern and began the search.
"Tim stepped in to the head
coaching position for us and
we have to give him credit,"
continued Tremeer. "These
are good hockey players, and
a great league of skilled teams.
Tim jumped in and made it
happen until we found people
to commit to the position."
With two new faces behind
the bench, the Centenaires
came out strong against the
Radars in the first. Clinton
jumped on the board first and
opened up a 2-0 lead before
the Cents got a late period
goal to head into the break
down by one. Both teams
came out firing in the second
period and the Cents struck
on the power play to bring the
game to 2-2 tie. However, as
has happened in many games,
penalties halted the momen-
tum allowing the Radars to
stretch the game open and put
the Cents in a catch up
position.
During the second period,
the penalty trouble began to
plague the green and white.
The Radars, with many tal-
ented players, began to pick
apart the penalty kill and tore
the game open. By Half way in
the third, the Radars had
pushed the game to a 8-2 lead.
Just past the half way point
of the third, the Cents began
to settle in, taking advantage
of several Radars penalties
and pushed back.
Two quick goals brought
the crowd back to life and the
team pressed on. Then, with

just under five minutes to go,
the Cents snagged another to
make it 8-5. However, that
would be it for the home team
and the Radars brought it
home for their first victory of
the season.
So, the battle continues to
earn the first win for the Cen-
tenaries. "You know the spirit
is pretty good in our room
still," said Cents defenseman
Mark Farias. "We're working at
being a team that plays for the
guy beside us, the guys coach-
ing us, the guys running the
squad and the community
that supports us. It's a target
the team will keep at the front
of their approach and hope
the wins will come with it
soon."
