Alvin McLellan with Mayor Bernie MacLellan' Councillors recognized for years of service Wednesday, October 15, 2014 • Huron Expositor 5 Whitney South, Huron Expositor Two Huron East councillors have been presented with awards of recognition for over 20 years of service to the municipality, courtesy of MP Huron -Bruce, Ben Lobb. The awards were presented to Coun. Larry McGrath and Coun. Alvin McLellan by mayor Bernie MacLellan in council chambers on behalf of the MP's office. IN THE YEARS ALONE Newly appointed Goderich clerk earns $400 a year in 1889 Oct. 18,1889 ■ Mr. Wm. Mitchell has be appointed town clerk of Goderich in place of Mr. Wm. Campbell, resigned, at a salary of $400 a year. • A number of young lads in St. Thomas recently rented a room over Pocock's store with the intention of using it as a rendezvous for the winter to smoke and read dime novels. The urchins were short of furniture and raided the barn of the Methodist church parsonage and carried off twelve yards of carpet, some stove pipes and a lot of other articles. The police arrested six of the boys, and the magistrate after severely lecturing them, allowed them to go on suspended sentence. • Duncan and Duncan clothiers of Sea - forth announced their Third Special Sale. Items of note: 15 cent dress goods at 10 1/2 cents; fine Cashmere jerseys at 75 cents each; heavy all -wool grey flannel at 19 cents per yard, and 'another big lot of fine neckties going this time at 25 cents each (these are worth from 50 to 75 cents): Oct. 23,1914 • There are still people who figure on the war being short, among them officials con- nected the foreign embassies in London, but those who seem to know most about it are not among these numbers. No doubt the more men that Britain and her allies can put in the field, the sooner it will come to a termination, but the War Office in London does not seem to expect that it will be finished before the end of next year. • It is expected that work on the Toronto - Hamilton concrete paved road will be commenced shortly. The object of this is to establish a 28 -mile stretch of road between the cities upon which automobiles can be driven at the greatest possible speed and with the least possible danger. • The Misses Barker of Goderich have a squash grown in their garden which weighs 120 pounds. Oct. 20,1939 • From the Seaforth Collegiate Institute news: The Girls' Athletic Society is holding a huge party while this column is going to press. Although the boys were not allowed inside, a large audience of boys fought for positions on the fire escape to witness this spectacle. • Toronto's Waverly Hotel, at Spadina and College, was advertising single room rates of $1.50 and up. • Northside United Church, Seaforth, cel- ebrated its 62nd Anniversary with a service and a guest appearance by Rev. R.B. Cochrane, Home Mission Secretary of the United Church of Canada. • Stewart Bros. Was advertising their new fall fashions, including dresses for $6.95. Angora gloves for $1 and winter under- wear ranging from 39 cents to $1.75. Oct. 225 1964 • Mrs. Donna Boyes, former secretary - treasurer of Seaforth PUC, will be tried by judge and jury at the Huron County court on an amended charge that she stole $4,910.09 from the connission from 1962 to 1964. • Mrs. J.I. McIntosh of Tuckersmith was crowned runner-up in the Huron County Plowmen's Queen of the Furrow contest. • Two Seaforth women, Mrs. Nora Larone and Mrs. Velma Talbot, were killed as a result of a two -car crash south of Exeter. • Plans are underway in Walton in prepa- ration for the 100th Anniversary of the Duff United Church. Oct. 18,1989 • The town of Seaforth has accepted with regret the resignation of Constable John Cairns from the Seaforth Police Depart- ment effective Sept. 30, 1989. Constable Cairns has been on a disability leave from the department since February of 1987, and resigned due to his ongoing disability. • This week, Bethel Bible Church in Egmondville will be celebrating its 25th anniversary. A banquet supper on Sunday will mark this milestone in the Associated Gospel Churches' congregation. • A groundbreaking ceremony for the ren- ovations to the Egmondville United Church was held Monday morning by rep- resentatives of that church. • The October meeting of the Seaforth Hos- pital Auxiliary was held in the Board Room with 18 members in attendance. The roll call was to bring an item for the White Elephant Table for the Bazaar. The reported amount of $276 was realized from the pie sale held at the hospital for the staff.
