18 Huron Expositor • Wednesday, October 8, 2014 Centenaires hit the ice for season opener in Seaforth If the packed parking lot, not to mention the amount of fans lined -up out the door of the arena, wasn't enough, those who turned out for the Centenaires home opener on Saturday night were cer- tainly loud enough to let everyone know that not only was the team back, but they had been missed. "The turnout really exceeded our expectations," said club president Bill Trem- eer. "We wanted a great atmosphere, community sup- port and a tight game. We really can saywe got it all and I can't thank people who came out enough. This was huge 499th Annual Emondville United Church RKEY SU PPER WED. The night opened with a nod to the some of the peo- ple who made Centenaire Hockey possible for many years, as local Cents sup- porters Joyce and Marg McClure were driven out to center ice by Graham Nesbitt where they met up with Conservative MP Ben Lobb for the inaugural puck drop. Mary Paige St. Onge led the crowd of over 400 in the singing of the national anthem, bringing the arena to life. "This was a big game for many of the guys here," said team captain Brendon Mer- ritt. "There's no question some of us were gripping the stick a little tight in the first, but we settled down and got into the game." It was Milverton who seemed to be able to shrug off the loud Seaforth fans and jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. "Man, it's a tough moment when you look up at the board and see that score. Every guy on the bench wanted to perform great tonight. We just had to remind ourselves that it was early in the game and do what we needed to and that was get to work," Merritt added. Before the end of the sec- ond, the Cents pulled within one of Milverton with goals from Scott Frey and Kodi Stoltz. Early in the third, Huron East's Andy Trimmel tied the game up with a quick shot past the visiting goalie. But Miverton kept the pressure on, moving ahead 4-3. Again the Cents answered back with a goal from Ryan McMurray. The blow for blow exchange continued with another goal from Milverton making it 5-4. With only four minutes to go, Phil Aslin netted the tying goal to pick the Cents up off the mat and send the game into overtime. Early on, Milverton would intercept the puck and end the seesaw battle to take the overtime win. "We wanted that win bad, it was an awesome crowd tonight and we really drew on that energy," said Merrit. "To fight back that many times, would have been something sweet for everyone in the arena. We couldn't have been more proud:' The Centenaires return to action this Saturday, Oct 11, against the Petrolia Squires in Seaforth. "There will be no easy games, but I loved our com- petitive level and we all loved the energy the town brought to this game," added McNaughton. "Outside the players, this game was about the town filling the arena. I'm not sure we can expect capacity every game, but what a way to start."
