Reader looking for
help with Seaforth's
bandshell
To the Editor;
Recently I approached the
Municipality of Huron East and
the Huron East/Seaforth Commu-
nity Development Trust request-
ing they allow me to volunteer as
'lead project manager' in refur-
bishing the Victoria Park band -
shell and grounds. I had read in
the paper about the generous
donation to the Municipality for
the Victoria band shell in memory
of Barbara Box-Postill. What a
wonderful gift to the community.
However, after walking around
the park and band shell I realized
that a coordinated effort needed
to be taken and obviously some-
one needed to take the lead.
After receiving the nod from
both the Municipality and the
Trust, I started my investigation
into what needs to be done to
refurbish this unique Heritage
property. I attended a meeting
with the Seaforth Heritage Com-
mittee and it was suggested that
we apply to the 'Preservation
Works Ontario' program spon-
sored by the ACO, hoping they
will accept our application and
review this wonderful heritage
building and suggest steps to
bring it back to its former glory.

The first bandstands built here
were located more toward the
centre of the park where the War
Memorial now stands. They were
circular and open on all sides; the
idea being that the audience
would sit around it and the music
would flow out. The War Memo-
rial was erected at the west end of
the park after World War I. The
names of 40 Seaforth area men
who had fought and died in that
war are inscribed along with
those of the 20 men who died in
WWII. Band concerts were played
every week throughout the sum-
mer, often on a Sunday evening.
The bandstand was also used for
political rallies and speeches,
amateur programs, and July 1st
celebrations. For several years the
Band & Legion Garden Party was
held here; it was the forerunner of
Reader says
thanks to local
merchants
To the Editor;
This is an appreciation for
the local merchants who
keep serving the community
while trying to make a
living.
Some stores are ones I fre-
quent more than others.
Two that come to mind in
particular are Seaforth
Foodland, I know it was a
relief when they rebuilt and
opened before the winter
weather, and our local drug
store. I also appreciate all
the community services
offered.
Of course there are times
where you have to go out of
town, but I'm glad to come
back home.

In 1924, Ernie Box and other
band members were sent to
Toronto to see the Canadian
National Exhibition bandshell.
The existing bandshell in Seaforth
was built with the same propor-
tions and coved ceiling.
The bandshell is made of
tongue -and -groove clapboarding
set horizontally on the sides and
back. The front wall is a series of
folding doors that open to reveal
the stage. Painted on the gable
end is a harp. The 33rd Battalion
Band and the Seaforth Citizens
Band played here.
A group of people has offered to
help me with this project, but I
have a request of you, the people
of Seaforth or anyone who enjoys
Victoria Park. It was suggested
that I gather as many past pictures
of the band shell that I can collect
for historical reference. Even a
part of the building in a picture
would be appreciated. I have
started a Facebook page 'Seaforth
Victoria Park and Bandstand
group' so comments and your
ideas can be discussed and
instructs where you can send your
pictures or contact information so
pictures can be picked up to help
in the restoration. We are hoping
that Seaforth Victoria Park can be
refurbished early next spring so
that the many people who take
pleasure in the use of the band -
shell and park can look forward to
enjoying the restorations in 2015.
Sincerely,
Maureen Agar

Town hall dishes out for United Way
East council served up some burgers and hot dogs, outside of town hall, for the united
way on Sept. 26. The group raised close to $1400 for the cause, which CAO Brad Knight
said was a little better than last year, and a total they were quite happy with.
