The Great Lakes Storm of
1913 Remembrance Com-
mittee is being celebrated
nationally for ensuring that
lives lost will be remembered
for years to come.
The committee came
together in 2012, to plan a
series of centennial remem-
brance events and activities to
honour those who lost their
lives in the greatest Canadian
maritime disaster ever to
occur on the Great Lakes.
The storm of 1913, known
as the White Hurricane, bat-
tered the Great Lakes from
Nov. 7 to 10 in 1913, claiming
250 lives.
As a result, the committee
has been awarded the 2014
Governor General's History
Award for Excellence in Com-
munity Programming, which
will be the third honour
bestowed upon the team.
For Seaforth resident and
descendent liaison, Kathy
Pletsch, the national award was
something quite unexpected,
but very much appreciated.
"When they told us we had
been found worthy of this
award, we were so honoured,"
she said. "I just kept thinking -
Kathy Pletsch, just this ordi-
nary person who lives in Sea -
forth is going to be getting a
Governor General's Award -
that's just remarkable
The only member from
outside of Goderich,
Pletsch's roll with the com-
mittee was to find as many
descendents of the actual
mariners from 1913 as possi-
ble, and ask them to attend
the event last year.
"It was really, truly incredi-
ble," she said, adding family
members took part from all
over North America. "There
were about 65 that came, which
was remarkable. We had one
whole family come and had
decided to make it a family
reunion, it was awesome
Throughout the weekend,
Pletsch says she plans to keep
a slip of paper with the names
of the mariners, as well as
their decedents, close to her.
"We really formed strong
bonds, especially me," she
said. "During last years
event, I had gotten talk to
people, listen to the stories
that had been passed down
and see the artifacts they had
kept. It really was a wonder-
ful experience
The committee left on Nov.
1 for Ottawa, to take part in
several events planned in
their honour throughout the
weekend, as well as the
awards ceremony on Mon-
day morning.
Last April, the committee
received a Huron County Her-
itage Award from the Huron
Arts and Heritage Network
and in this past June they were
the recipients of the prestig-
ious Dorothy Duncan Award
presented by the Ontario His-
torical Society.
The Remembrance Com-
mittee designed activities
around Goderich to inspire
others along the Huron
lakeshore to undertake
complementary events. In
total, 65 collaborations were
born that involved over
1,000 volunteers, numerous
events that welcomed over
12,000 guests including doz-
ens of descendants of the
disaster's victims.
The Great Lakes Storm of
1913 Remembrance Com-
mittee would like to thank
the general public who sup-
ported their activities over
the spring, summer and fall
of 2013, the 65 other groups,
museums, heritage organi-
zations, theatre groups, art
galleries, musicians,
churches, businesses, gov-
ernments, industries and
individuals with whom they
collaborated, as well as the
hundreds of volunteers who
make these multiple under-
takings possible.
"It is our hope that this
national recognition will
engender a pride in the hearts
of the 65 descendants of the
more than 265 victims of this
horrific maritime tragedy who
were able to attend our culmi-
nating events last November,"
said Paul Carroll, a member of
the Great Lakes Storm of 1913
Remembrance Committee.
"It was primarily to hon-
our their lost ancestors that
we undertook this centen-
nial remembrance!'
The 2014 Governor Gener-
al's History Awards take
place on Nov. 3 at 11:30 a.m.
at Rideau Hall in Ottawa.
Governor General Hon.
David Johnston will honour
the recipients for their
achievements and contribu-
tions to furthering in and
understanding of our history
and heritage.
