Though a number of new faces will be seen at the council table, several candidates will be return- ing including Mayor Bernie MacLellan and Deputy Mayor Joe Steffler, who were both acclaimed before the election. Also acclaimed were returning Brussels Coun. David Blaney and newcomer John Lowe. Both Seaforth councillors Nathan Marshall and Bob Fisher were re-elected, as well as incumbents Alvin McLellan and Dianne Diehl from the Grey Ward, and Larry McGrath from Tuckersmith. New councillors will include Kevin Wilbee and Brenda Dalton for McKillop, as well as Ray- mond Chartand in Tuckersmith. This year was a first for Huron East residents, with online and tel- ephone voting taking the place of traditional polling stations throughout the municipality. According to Huron East CAO, Brad Knight, the municipality's new voting methods were a wel- comed success. "We were pretty happy with how the system operated from our perspective," he said. "After years of running manual elec- tions, this was pretty slick." According to a report released by the municipality, turnout in Tuckersmith and McKillop increased since the last election and Grey was the same, while Seaforth saw a decrease of 121 voters participating this year. "It was interesting to us two of the four were a higher turn- out than normal," said Knight, adding he believed it wasn't just the ease of the new system that increased numbers, but the way the information was shared. "Some of the candi- dates were out there letting people know about the system and the convenience. The feed- back we've had has been 99 per cent positive and we're cer- tainly happy with the system and the way it worked." Nathan Marshall wishes to say thank you to his family and friends for their support over the last four years, as well as the resi- dents of Seaforth and Huron East for welcoming him to this honorable position as Seaforth Ward representative again. "The next four years of Huron Nathan Marshall East council will hopefully bring change to numerous aspects of the way we do business and ser- vice the residents," he said, add- ing though council will see many challenges ahead, he is confident the municipality will work toward a more prosperous future by looking into the future with a strategic plan. "It is my hope we can reinvigorate a sense of com- munity and volunteerism. Too many boards, clubs, committees, and organizations have to few people getting involved, or many of the same people involved in all of them." For Marshall, working the Firemen's breakfast each year has taught him that "many hands make light work," while being a part of the CKNX Health Care Heroes Radio has shown him that, "if we all give a little, we all get a lot" Marshall added though both are sayings we have all heard, now is the time to put them into action. "The support from volunteers, businesses, and com- munity have been welcomed and are a needed part of this small town." While attending conferences, Mar- shall has had a chance to chat with councillors from other parts of the province. Many small towns share the same fear communities will have to pay people to do what volunteers have done for many years. "Very soon there will be a call to vol- unteers for boards and committees of council, and I urge you, if you have any interest in making this a more sustain- able or vibrant community, please put your name forward and get involved," he explained. "We need ideas and we need help.
